Awake - recommend purchase review
Review of Awake - Dream Theater by
johnny12345
Advantages: Techically advanced, great melodies and harmonies - powerful music
Disadvantages: Complex melodies not appreciated enough
An earlier release from progressive metal band Dream Theater. I technically complex, yet melodic album - typical of the band. The guitar solo's are fantastic, the ryhthms advanced, and the vocals powerful.
Jordan Rudess shows his stuff on Keyboard - John Petrucci following with interleaving melodies and harmonies. This is a vintage Dream Theater album - that must be owned by any serious fan.
For those who are not so sure about Progressive rock/metal, ...

In the Beginning.......
Review of Platinum Collection - Genesis by
Bollinger28
Advantages: Some all time classics songs
Disadvantages: Format seems out of kilter to me
The Platinum Collection from Genesis is a three CD boxed set of all their best songs. It's really the story of Genesis told backwards. The third CD ends with their first ever release and the first CD begins with their last hit before they stopped recording. It's really quite hard to review this CD, as its 40 odd songs long and takes about 4 hours to listen to properly, and a track by track analysis would take forever to write and be extremely tedious ... ...lots of live albums) went platinum and spawned many chart successes. In 1996, Phil Collins left the band, not through musical differences, it was simply a matter of geography (this was when Collins moved to Switzerland). Rutherford and Banks decided to carry on without him and in 1997, they announced that Collins would be replaced by ex-Stiltskin vocalist Ray Wilson. In September 1997, Genesis released what would be their final studio album "Calling ...

Octavarium
Review of Octavarium - Dream Theater by
Matacon
Advantages: Classic Dream Theater, but with a new twist
Disadvantages: More of a "poppy" style that Dream Theater's other work
...introduced on Train of Thought, Octavarium still manages to be a different album, with its own individual style.
The range of different song styles on this album is staggering, with the poppy U2esque style of I Walk Beside You, compared to teh PInk Floyd style of parts of the title track Octavarium. Possibly the only thing I would change about this album would be more focus on the progressive style of Dream Theater's earlier albums, such as Awake ...

The first and only of its kind
Review of In The Court Of The Crimson King - King Crimson by
jmcmeekin
Advantages: Wouldnt know it was made 30 years ago
Disadvantages: Art Work
...press. At one stage in their early career, beginning on January 13th 1969, they were ear-marked to be the next Beatles. King Crimson did better; staying out of the public focus enabled them to create truly magnificent masterpieces. In the Court of the Crimson King, King Crimson's debut album, originally released in 1969 was to set the standards for progressive rock for the next decade. The distinctive cover art should not put anyone off; I don't ... ...around 8 or 9 minutes in length, this is a sit back and feel your spine tingle album. At points you will feel compelled to stand high upon your desk and sing with Greg Lake (lead vocalist), and at other moments you can do nothing but sit back and let the music guide you into an almost hypnotic state.
21st Century Schizoid Man the first track on the album, is hard hitting and starts with a impact. Expect large variety of instruments and some legendary ...

Snakes & Arrows
Review of Snakes And Arrows - Rush by
superme3
Advantages: Mature Rush - for all of us who grew up with them!
Disadvantages: None at all!
For all the Rush fans who have eagerly been awaiting this album you will be blown away!
Absolutely addictive! After a few years of being converted by my husband (who is a huge fan), the long awaited new album release proceeding the tour arrived. Now I've listened to alot of their earlier albums (Roll the Bones, Counterparts, etc) and was really blown away by their new stuff. Geggy Lee's voice has matured magically over the past 30 odd years, and ... ...on this album. Neil Peart of course just cannot be matched by ANY drummer on this earth!
If you are a long time Rush fan you will NOT be disapppointed
I will not talk about each track - they are all fantastic and everyone will have their own favourites!
Here's to the next album which will hopefully be the live stuff from their huge World Tour 2007 which I had the privelige to see in Mancherter. Rock on Rush!!!!! ...
