Advantages: a brief but insightful overview of the band Disadvantages: no singleCD is big enough to fully show their genius
...up a copy of "The Best of the Doors" and album that highlights every facet of their versatility and originality.
This 2 CD 19 track odyssey begins with one of their better known songs, although even the those that think they don't know much about the band will probably find that many of the songs strike a chord of recognition within. "Break on Through" opens with a fuzz box guitar and the relentless rhythms of the bass. This dark blues-rock journey ... ...yet it is easily their best known song.
"The Crystal Ship" carries us away to the other spectrum of the band. A vocal dominated mellow number that sees the music in a subservient role to Morrison's honey voice. I must admit that its not a song that I expected to see on an album such as this but it does show the band in their mellow reflective mood. It has to be said that drugs and in Morrison's case alcohol played a massive part in the bands creativity. ...
Advantages: Some of the best early Floyd Disadvantages: Tracks taken from progressive albums so they lose something
I've always loved this album and it's original cover not pictured here,it's some of the earliest progressive rock ever with, such brilliant Syd Barret Tracks as "See Emily Play" a wistful song presumably about a woman and "Bike" a pschadelic song about Syd's posessions. Pink floyds sound changed quite a bit when Syd had a breakdown and left and was replaced by Dave Gilmour, so this is an important album in my mind, keeping Syds music alive. (though ... ...of the tracks)
I also love "Arnold Lane" a strange song about a transvestite who steals womens clothes by night and ends up in prison. It has a very strange black and white video as well if you can find it. There are also many instrumental songs like "Interstellar Overdrive and "careful with that Axe Eugene".
This is a great album to play in the background at social gatherings if your friends are into Progressive Rock, this is a popular album. ...
Advantages: Possibly the finest incognito musical pastiche of all Disadvantages: May, alas, be seen as a curate's egg by some
Swindon: it's more than railway museums and a mad roundabout, you know. The Everyday Story Of Smalltown For a town of its size, it's made a disproportionate contribution to popular culture. Latter-day Status Quo imitators Oasis named themselves after Swindon's swimming pool and leisure centre (can't they rename the sports complex 'Coasting Along On Former Glories That Weren't Actually That Glorious When You Think About It' in tribute? No?). The ... ...and TV presenter Mark Lamarr too. As was Justin 'Forever Autumn and all those terrible Moody Blues songs while giving Richard Clayderman his look' Hayward. And singing-and-thesping damsel Billie Piper. Like the others cited, Billie wasted little time in leaving the place when she got the chance? Why? Because Swindon has developed a reputation as a place that time forgot, oft mocked by comedians (Mr Izzard in particular) and whose glories decreased ...
Advantages: One of the best albums ever made! Disadvantages: None
...'Have You Ever Been (to Electric Ladyland)', the third track then takes you into 'Crosstown Traffic' likening a difficult lady to the harassment of rush hour in the big city. The good old British pop sound is here to in 'Little Miss Strange' and to some extent 'Let the Good Times Roll'! It's all here and is absolutely flawless from start to finish! The album cover is interesting with a large number of naked ladies, which apparently Jimi didn't like ...
Advantages: Great Album With Some Of His Classic Songs Disadvantages: None
After the huge success of his debut album Are You Experienced, Jimi Hendrix and the rest of the Jimi Hendrix Experience were under pressure to produce again, and of course they did. Coming only half a year after the release of Are You Experienced, comes this more creative and meandering album that tends to be forgotten after the likes of his debut and Electric Ladyland, but it shouldn't be, as this is just as good an addition to the Jimi Hendrix ... ...his lifetime, any album should be snatched up and listened to immediately. The main idea that Jimi came up with for the album, is that he wanted his guitar to sound as if it was being played under water, and in many of the tracks this idea is evident. This is a great album that is often overlooked, but it shouldn't be, as this is an incredible collection of music and any Hendrix fan should own this. Most of you may know the story about the first ...
