Back To Bedlam. Bang goes my street-cred Advantages: Some good songs Disadvantages: All a bit samey ...- and his first album, Back To Bedlam - attracts opinions that are much more varied than the contents of the album itself. Personally, I think the album is ok - even bordering on good - but my main criticism of it would be the similarity of a lot of the songs. So much so that I find it impossible to give a track-by-track analysis and find enough to say about each song. Most people will be familiar with the album's signature track, You're Beautiful, ... ...the rest of the album: strummy acoustic guitars, simple pleasing harmonies, well-written meaningful lyrics and that little-bit-posh, little-bit-whiney, little-bit-nasal voice that wouldn't sound out of place narrating a Famous Five story. A few of the songs do stir me emotionally (especially Goodbye My Lover) and, on the whole, it is an album that I ocassionally enjoy listening to from start to finish. Leonards's millionth CD! Advantages: soulful, excellent lyrics, has all the old favourites, two disc album Disadvantages: the voice sometimes gets too droney So what has this album got to offer? -Its a double disc album -It has all the best songs, such as, Suzanne, Sisters of Mercy and Hallelujah -There is a total of 31 songs on the album The whole two discs play for approximately two hours and 36 minutes which is a good length for an album. All Cohen fans will love every minute of this album. There are some amazing tunes on this album which are, for me, my all time favourite tunes, but Cohen's music ... ...people who cant stand to listen to Leonard Cohen, claiming its simply bad music, its depressing music, and even that he can not sing. He is definately a love or hate artist. Inside the sleeve of the album, there is a list of the the songs on the album, detailing the lyricist, when it was recorded and from which of his dozen or so album's it comes from. David Gray - White Ladder Advantages: Great Chill Out Music Disadvantages: None David Gray - White Ladder Well i am a big fan of David Gray and i have alway liked to sit and listento his music. This album is a great album over all and i have enjoyed listening to every track on the disk. The album itself has fantastic album art and i love to read the back of the album art whilst i am listening to the album. My favorate songs on this album are, Track 2. Babylon Track 8. Old Owl Eyes Is Back Advantages: Some Essential Reed Songs Disadvantages: A lot of filler This was Lou Reed's second solo album, post Velvet Underground, produced under the aegis of his mentor and RCA label mate of the time David Bowie. The album is heavily influenced by "Ziggy" era Bowie, which ironic considering that Bowie was heavily influenced by the work of Reed with the Velvet Underground. Reed influencing Bowie influencing Reed. The album is none the worse for Ziggy's influence. The cover is interesting featuring a scary stark ... ...and models representing Reed's male / female personae on the back. There are some fine songs here, opening with the excellent "Vicious" which could have graced a VU album, this is floowed by "Andy's Chest" about Mr Warhol. Next up we have "Perfect Day" which was also the "B" side of the stand out song here "Walk On The Wildside" with that loping distictive Herbie Flowers bass riff (for which he was reputedly paid a tenner session players fee).
