The Clash, The Singles review
Advantages: Plenty of great tunes to keep you listening Disadvantages: Obvious lack of some classics that weren't singles
This is a great compilation that charts the development and journey of the Clash from their early days as hedonistic punks, to their later days of commercial success in the US.
There are loads of great tunes on this album, and one can but wonder why none of them were UK Top Ten Hits during the band's lifetime. All the key phases of The Clash are represented here, and this CD, with its wide range of genre-spanning tracks is a great testiment to the ... ...an avowed Clash fan, you probably own several Clash CDs already, and therefore perhaps you may find this album an unneccesary addition to your collection. Also, to get a true reflection of the Clash, one must also consider the quality of many album-only tracks which aren't featured on this compliation for obvious reasons. This does not detract from what a great album this is, with the ability to appeal to a wide and diverse audience. ...

My Own Personal Jesus
Advantages: Good, varied music Disadvantages: None
Well not quite my object of worship, but this album comes close. Twenty-one songs spanning twelve years of an impressive career, Depeche Mode (DM) still stand strong throughout their ups and downs (and they've certainly had their downs). When you come across a band with a colourful history, you tend to find a lot of events in their personal lives are reflected in the music. Here it's certainly true and the songs are extremely variable which is a ... ...with ‘Stripped’ released in 1986, quite a dark song which is far fetched from the cheesy pop days of when Vince Clarke (Erasure) was the main songwriter for DM. Taking over from Vince is Martin Gore, probably one of the most underrated lyricists and musicians in the world of music. Pretty much a love song, Stripped sets in stone the bands trademark of mixing synthesisers (Martin Gore, Alan Wilder and Andrew Fletcher) with melodic vocals ...

Listen to the band (again)
Advantages: Some stonking 70's hit singles Disadvantages: B sides are a little ropey soundwise
The Glitter Band were best known for supporting Gary Glitter, AKA Paul Gadd AKA Paul Raven AKA convicted nonce, back in the glory days of Glam Rock, where brain-fried ex-pyschadelic musos donned shiny jumpsuits and high heeled boots to produce thumping neo-HM 45RPM singles usually revolved around the subject of getting off with someone at the Saturday nite "discoteque". Reverberating major chords and repetitive chanted choruses helped to make some ... ...their erstwhile "leader" went solo in 1974, presumably to make lots of money and molest some more young children, the Band went out and did their own thing, bringing out a string of hits that together with their orignal B sides make up this album.
Anyone who remembers the Band will instantly think of the star guitar wielded by Gerry Sheperd and the double drumming attack of Pete Phipps and Tony Leonard. Whilst not the only band with two drummers ...

Paul Young's Greatest Hits Collection from 1991
Advantages: Good collection of songs Disadvantages: Quite out of date now
I recently decided to look right through my tape collection and found this. It was also released on CD in 1998. Of course, a newer collection, "The Essential Paul Young" has just been released but "From Time To Time" is a good compilation.
The track listing is as follows:
1. Every Time You Go Away
2. Come Back And Stay
3. I'm Only Foolin' Myself
4. Senza una Donna
5. I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down
6. Broken Man
7. Everything Must Change
... ...Of The Common People
11. Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home)
12. Both Sides Now
13. Oh Girl
14. Softly whispering I Love You
My personal favourites are the cover of Daryl Hall's "Everytime You Go Away" and the angst-ridden "Wherever I Lay My Hat". I enjoy the R and B tinged "I'm Only Fooling Myself" and "Everything Must Change".
"Wherever I Lay My Hat" was originally the B-side to Marvin Gaye's "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby" and was meant ...

No Doubt its an album worth buying =)
Advantages: Original, best hits in one place, great tracks Disadvantages: Quite specific genre...none others really!
This is a greatest hits album by band No Doubt.
I only bought it originally because it was on sale for £6 in some random shop, and i liked Don't Speak. However, I was very pleasantly surprised with the rest of the album - all catchy, quality tracks, and a bit of variety spice too.
What kind of music is it?
Well, personally i find it quite hard to describe - a cross between pop, rock, ska? maybe. I recommend trying this album for a good initial ... ...any of those genres though! From the club like beats of Hella Good & Hey Baby, you also have a dose of ballads such as Don't Speak and several feel good anthems such as Just A Girl and Spiderwebs. All on one album! To me, it also seems to flow quite well - in my opinion every track is worth listening too, none to be skipped(!) except perhaps Running, (but its just not really my thing) and the 2 bonus tracks. These bonus remixes would be loved by ...
