A-Ha - Definitive Collection?

Advantages: Very good first half.
Disadvantages: Bad second half.

A-Ha will probably always be remembered mostly for their hit single in the 80's ' Take On Me' and the video that accompanied it, which featured groundbreaking animation at the time. But there was always a lot more to a-ha then this, as shown on this greatest hits collection. While there is that excellent hit, there are also other notable hits, including 'Hunting High And Low', 'The Sun Always Shines on TV' and 'The Living Daylights', which all have ...
...the sound of bands around today like Coldplay and Keane, who have both stated that they are huge fans of a-ha. And rightfully so, a-ha have a knack for writing excellent pop songs, which is showed beautifully on the album 'Hunting High And Low'. But this isn't that album. Getting the balance right?

Advantages: 17 tracks including 15 singles on the cd
Disadvantages: Some tracks do sound very dated

The first of two cd's to chart the Depeche Mode years from 1981-1998. This one concentrates on the years '81-'85. It's one of those moments that when you first play this you remember just how many hits they did have, and just how young they sounded as well! This collection is real quality, lots of hit tracks right from day one. A couple of tracks does really show their age and perhaps a slight lack of musical experience but i think this just adds ...
...There are lots of DM classics on here - People Are People, See You, Everything Counts, Master And Servant and plenty more. If you don't own any early Depeche Mode albums than please buy this one, you will be surprised how good they really were for a band of such a young age. Good comp full of good 80's songs. ...

The essential PSB album

Advantages: PSB, of course
Disadvantages: Should be a two-disc set

If you were only going to have one PSB album (and who would have only one??) this would be the one. When it was released, it was the "complete singles" edition, although even then it wasn't -- the limitations of CDs meant they had to make a few choices about what to include and what to leave out, if they were going to keep it to one disc. They should have opted for the extended version, but they didn't. However, all the big hits, those songs for ...
...Of course their first international smash hit was "West End Girls" and that song remains the big standard for them. It wasn't really their first song or first attempt at a single, but it is the first major song. ...This is a greatest hits album from a band who I have up there as one of the master bands of Rock and Roll music. I am sure some of this bands songs have appeared on movies as soundtracks. In addition the main reason I bought this album is because they included the song you better you bet as track number 16 as well as the classic song 'who are you'. Largely because of these two classic tracks I bought the album as I wanted to listen to other tracks ...

Of Whales and Woe is Les Claypool's first proper solo album. His name may not be familiar to all as he is better known as Primus' frontman bassist extraordinaire. This album was released back in 2006 on his own record label Prawn Song. (It was recently re-released on vinyl as of November 2009.) ...check this out! The arrangements of the other instruments like saxophone sitar, guitar and drums, etc sit really well together without drowning anything out. The songs themselves are really catchy and you'll find yourself singing along too by the end of it. There is even one track on here, Iowan Girl, written specially for his wife with some of the most amazing bass playing I have ever heard. There isn't a bad track on here in my opinion.
