Who are the Brain Police?
Review of Freak Out - Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention by NancyRowina

Advantages: A wonderfully weird album
Disadvantages: Perhaps a bit to weird for some?

...get a lot for your money, and there's weird quoteworthy lines to freak your friends with like "Suzy cream cheese, what's gotten into ya'?" and "are you hung up?". in summary if there's someone you don't like and want revenge on, spike them with LSD and play them this! ... Read review

Zappa's use of apostrophe ' ' ' '
Review of Apostrophe - Frank Zappa by chrisman225

Advantages: An insight into the great mind that was - Frank Zappa
Disadvantages: May be a little to wild for some people.

Apostrophe was released in 1974 on the 'Zappa' label. Track One - Don't Eat the Yellow Snow '' Quite a famous track for Zappa, but at 2mins 7secs it doesn't really provide much of an insight into what the album is going to be like. Also, as you probably have already understood, the 'yellow snow' meaning. Track Two - Nanook Rubs It ' ...
...show his great creativity. Track Three - St. Alfonzo's pancake breakfast '' From the title you can probably grasp that this track is going to be quite interesting... and you wouldn't be wrong. Very tight musicianship is shown with weird time sigs and a nice use of brass. Track Four - Father O'Blivion '' ... Read review

Absolutely Free - Free musical expression
Review of Absolutely Free - Frank Zappa by dangaroo

Advantages: Crazy, humourous, artistic
Disadvantages: The artwork has been printed poorly.

Absolutely Free, is Frank Zappa's second release with the Mothers of Invention and it certainly shows what is to come and really portrays Frank's adaptability and penchant for weirdness, mortalised with insane vocals. The album is constructed in a clever way, so that each song blows the previous one away with a different and crazy style yet still as an album still works as one big powerful block still. A mixture of psychedelic rock, jazz from satan's ...
...confronts conformity, sexual repression and pop music with humour. We can get carried away with the craziness of it all without giving time to praise the musicians who never put a foot wrong in this bombardment of tunes. Throughout the album, there is a mention of fruit and veg. Call any Vegetable is my personal fave but Brown Shoes Don't Make it is a musical and lyrical masterpiece, detailing Old City hall Fred and his fondness for bedding a 13 ... Read review

Just how talented can one guy be
Review of Broadway The Hard Way - Frank Zappa by welshpete

Advantages: Another Classic Zappa performance
Disadvantages: The tracks that didn't fit on the CD

Zappa. The name on a CD case should be considered a guarantee of the quality of content inside. Since discovering Frank's work through collecting everything his one-time guitarist Steve Vai's work; Zappa now hold a place in my opinion as the finest musician/composer/social commentator of the 20th Century. And this album, made up of live recordings from the 1988 world tour, is one of his finest hours. Zappa has a righteous dig at a great many groups ...
...of the time ("Sincerely Ron, we mean it!"). However the delivery of the the messages is not a rant, more a collection of finely crafted music with appropriate social commentary over the top. Play "Any Kind of Pain" to many sections of the entertainment industry and the would love it - and most probably completely miss the pop it takes at them. The musical interjections of other pieces within "Rhymin Man" show just how tight a live band can be....when ... Read review

Flower Power Sucks
Review of We're Only In It For The Money - Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention by everyplatewebreak

Advantages: One of the most subversive albums of all time
Disadvantages: Original artwork is concealed within the booklet

...mind-bent kids littered Haight Ashby. We're Only In It For The Money (WOIIFTM) is very much the soundtrack to this disintegration, and in many ways, was the herald for the death of the decade. Despite being recorded between August and October 1967 and released the following January, WOIIFTM places me into a particular year ('68) better than any other record. WOIIFTM was initially conceived as Our Man In Nirvana, a collaboration between the Mothers ...
...comedy routines. Bruce had died in 1966 from a suspected morphine overdose and was a cultural hero to the 'Underground' scenes of New York and Los Angeles. Work was just beginning in the preparation of the album when Frank Zappa first heard a little record called Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Zappa liked the record enough, but the levels to which the album was quickly embraced by the hippy-trip populace surprised him. Further spurred on ... Read review
