I first got to know of the band Edguy when I saw them as a support band to Dragonforce at Nottingham Rock City, back in 2006. To be honest I was actually somewhat disappointed when they had to finish to allow Dragonforce onto the stage. Needless to say I soon snapped up all their albums and I have been an avid fan ever since. Forming in 1992, Edguy are a power metal band hailing from Fulda in Germany and the band name is out of respect to their maths teacher.
The Band
Felix Bohnke- Drums Tobias Exxel- Bass Guitar Jens Ludwig- Lead Guitar Tobias Sammet- Vocals Dirk Sauer- Rhythm Guitar
Many others as well as I, describe Edguy as the new Iron Maiden. Tobias Sammet the lead singer, is clear with a powerful voice and does sound a touch like Bruce Dickinson. Rocket Ride is one of my favourite albums by the band who's style compared to other power metal bands is a touch different. Rocket Ride is a power Metal album at heart but some tracks actually come closer to heavy/progressive metal. This album contains 12 tracks with most of these tracks being the heavier ones done by Edguy.
My personal favourite tracks on the album are The Asylum and the impressive track Superheroes that utilises great use of the keyboard. I have often thought this would be the perfect track to the series Heroes. The guitaring by Edguy is absolutely awesome, and all lyrics are also written by lead singer Tobias Sammet. One of the fresh things about this album as well as the bands other albums is that whilst many tracks have a profound message, Edguy tend not too always take themselves too seriously. This is because all albums with Rocket Ride being no exception, have tracks that are humourous and designed for light hearted fun. Examples of this are on this album in the tracks Lavatory Love Machine and Fucking With Fire.
The Tracks
"Sacrifice" "Rocket Ride" "Wasted Time" "Matrix" "Return to the Tribe" "The Asylum" "Save Me" "Catch of the Century" "Out of Vogue" "Superheroes" "Trinidad" "Fucking with Fire (Hair Force One)" "Land of the Miracle (Live in Brazil)" limited edition bonus track "Reach Out" Japanese Bonus Track "Lavatory Love Machine" (Acoustic Version) Japanese Bonus Track
This is an excellent album to buy and if you find that you like this you should check out the other production by Tobias Sammet called Avantasia which produce a metal opera style of music combining poer metal with orchestra's. Avantasia albums include special guest performances by many other great metal legends. For me Edguy is the best band to hail from Germany with there edgy, catchy tracks.
