Rockferry, the Welsh singer's lovingly constructed debut album, has already succeeded ... more
beyond expectations, and although Duffy may not quite be the ingénue portrayed by a clever press campaign (she nearly won a local television talent show a few years back while a single credited to Aimee Duffy is still available on iTunes) she is surely the most appealing of the current flood of young soul sirens. The astonishing title track, co-written by Bernard Butler, sounded like a lost transmission that had taken decades to get through as soon as it hit radio last year. But the gently rolling soul ballad "Stepping Stone", that strapping, inescapable monster hit "Mercy", the ice cool "Serious" (the one time she really does channel the spirit of Dusty Springfield) and the wistful, elegant "Warwick Avenue" are similarly effective. Suggestions by some that Rockferry is little more than sixties pastiche are churlish. Butler's previous work with David McAlmont (featured here as a backing singer) showed his skill at writing and arranging the dramatic, while her other collaborators such as Steve Booker and the team of Jimmy Hogarth and Eg White are hardly lightweights. But despite some wonderful orchestral settings, it's Duffy's terrific voice that makes this so satisfying, even overpowering Butler's exquisitely underplayed guitar work on "Rockferry" itself. Growling the blues on "Syrup & Honey" or belting it out over his lovingly arranged wall of sound on "Distant Dreamer", she sets the tone throughout, several of her songs dealing with escape, both physical and romantic. The sound of someone singing herself to stardom, Rockferry is at times genuinely amazing. Steve Jelbert

Advantages: Excellent soulful pop music, intelligent lyrics and extremely powerful vocals. Disadvantages: Ten tracks is simply not enough to aptly showcase the talent of Duffy.

The Evening Standard commented late last year that 'she will be the sound of 2008' and whilst this may not be entirely true, 2008 will definitely be a good year for her I feel. She's certainly started the year off quite well by gaining herself a Number 1 single, that's for sure.
Beginning with title track 'Rockferry', Duffy kicks off the album in tremendous style. It's an excellent launching point for the album, a perfect presentation of her soulful music. It is such a powerful track and certainly grabs your attention right from the offset. She's got one hell of a voice on her has Duffy, she sure belts it out in this one and never will you find yourself disappointed as she dazzles you with her terrific vocal style. She is only 23 and yet the voice she beholds belies her young age, the strength of sound she exudes when she sings possesses a power that few can boast of conveying on a début album.
The funky flavour of aforementioned hit single 'Mercy' certainly goes down well with me, it is this track that I feel provides the album with its finest moment. Right from the first beat you know that you're in for something special with this one and as the track unfolds you are certainly not left disappointed. The chorus is absolutely fantastic and is really what makes this one so powerful I feel, there is also a brilliant drumbeat which is present throughout the entirety of the track. In 'Mercy', Duffy shows that she is a force to be reckoned with as a vocalist and more than proves what a fantastically talented singer-songwriter she truly is. Her voice is never short of sensational and always she impresses with that great tone of hers, a tone of voice that possesses a rare quality of elegance and sophistication.
With so many average singer-songwriters out there doing well for themselves at the moment, it is only right that 2008 is the year for Duffy to really make her mark. The music possesses a great maturity and unlike some of her contemporaries Duffy does not rely on incoherent sentences in order to make her mark, instead the music is greatly intelligent and the lyrics actually mean something. Album tracks such as 'Warwick Avenue' and 'Serious' are extremely well rounded and finely put together, providing perfectly for music that is absolutely excellent to listen to. The music is always thoroughly enjoyable, hugely powerful, and never does Duffy disappoint with her larger than life voice.
Ending the album with 'Distant Dreamer' Duffy goes out on a high, leaving you wanting for more and craving to hear another of her finely crafted soulful pop anthems. It definitely ends the album on a high, I fail to see how anyone could dislike this one and I personally thoroughly enjoy the listen each and every time I hear 'Distant Dreamer'. Once more her vocals are belted out at the top of her voice and will certainly not leave you disappointed. When listening to the music you tend to forget her age and the fact that this is only her début album, all this goes out the window and all you hear is an extremely mature and well accomplished musician who sounds to be at the top of her game. Duffy was born to perform and never in this album does she ever seem to suggest otherwise, each and every moment on this release is finely crafted and expertly carried out.
'Rockferry' has an extremely calming effect on you as a listener, whatever you may be thinking or feeling when you begin listening to the album will soon be forgotten and the music will overcome you. You can feel as the music runs through every inch of your being, it is a great feeling and Duffy's début album definitely does not disappoint. There are ten tracks here, each as beautiful and well crafted as the next and never is the sound produced anything short of sensational. Wales has definitely produced a fine artist in Duffy, she is exceptionally talented and should certainly have a terrific career ahead of her. This may be her first album, but I'm sure that it wont be her last. I could easily listen to the music of Duffy all day without ever tiring of it, her voice truly is that stunningly sensational in sound. If you're a fan of singer-songwriters then I think you'll find that Duffy is amongst the best and her music is therefore definitely well worth a listen. Those that appreciate soulful pop music should love the sound of Duffy, she should go far and I have full faith in her that she shall.

Advantages: Lovely voice, great songs Disadvantages: Rubbish inlay booklet
...starts with the debut single Rockferry a piano based ballad that speeds up with some clever guitar work. The song sounds like a modern interpretation of Dusty Springfield's material, an impressive benchmark to say the least.
I feel Duffy's voice is better than Amy Winehouse & these songs on her debut album highlight the range she can sing to.
There is no better example of that than the next track Warwick Avenue, which I heard being played on the ... ...My favourite & the one that made me go out & buy this CD is 'Stepping stone' with its wonderful haunting sound, a real future classic.
Her second single the more up-tempo 'Mercy' is also featured & although I quite liked it when I first heard it on the radio, when I really make the effort to hear it I enjoy it all the more. It sounds like something from the 1960s but still sounds fresh & modern all the same.
The final track 'Distant dreamer' is ...

Advantages: Stunning Vocals / Music with Very Emotional and Heartfelt Lyrics Disadvantages: Probably a bit too short
...played live, those being, Mercy, Rockferry and Stepping Stone, and in between these shows I was very fortunate to have seen her live in Concert, and she was brilliant there too. Then all of a sudden " Mercy " was at number one in the Charts, and everyone wanted to know about Duffy, what a turn around for this Lady, she is only 23 Years old, and this is the start of a whirlwind time for her now I'm sure of that, and well deserved in my opinion.
So, ... ...chords of the first track, Rockferry start to weave its magic, you know you are in for a treat with this CD, the haunting vocals of Duffy then start to sneak into the song, and slowly take over the track, its a stunning opening track, and sets the mood for what is to come, and it certanly does NOT disappoint, it just gets better and better every time I hear it.
Next up is, Warwick Avenue, another very emotional and personal song, probably written ...

Advantages: great Disadvantages: all songs sound the same
...Stone, I'm Scared, Serious and Rockferry being the name of the album with many more to chose from too.
If you are looking for an album to chill out this it's the album for you, I did not listen to it one song after the other I played it on my ipod on shuffle and I thought all of the songs were great, but as most of the songs are sad and about heartbreak and to me all sound simular I could not listen to the album continually as I prefer a few upbeat ...

Advantages: good lyrics, amazzzing voice Disadvantages: a LOT of the songs sound similar to me.
Im very torn with this album to be honest. I really like some of the tracks but then really dislike some too. rockeferry, the title cover of the album, im not that fond of. dont get me wrong she can really sing in this song but i think its a bit depressing. warwick avenue i like, just for the pure quality of her voice and the good lyrics that remind me of someone i knew. her acting in the video is brilliant too which drew me to the song.
serious, ... ...but the lyrics i have to give credit for as they are pretty good. "I always wanted to see
What colour's your destiny"
stepping stone is my favourite. i really liked it once id heard it a few times, definitly a grower. amazing lyrics, brilliant video and her voice is truly stunning in this song. then the only other one i really like is mercy. there good songs to listen to to chill out but maybe its just me who doesnt like some of the songs. sorry ...
