Review of Sketches Of Spain [Remastered] - Miles Davis by kafouroutsos

Advantages: amazing interpretation of a classical piece
Disadvantages: Let me think about that.....hmmmmmm...........aaaaaaaaa...no

..., John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, Jimi Hendrix if he was not dead and many many others that I would need pages to enumerate them(actually 10 lines would be sufficient but anyway). It is in the late 50's when Miles after he introduced the cool jazz idiom as a kind of an answer to the hard-bop idiom of the time, he decides to reorchestrate the whole "Concerto d' Aranjuez" for guitar, by Rodrigo, in a more Miles way. His main assistant? Famous jazz orchestrator and composer Gill Evans, not to be mistaken with the other great jazz pianist Bill Evans, who also as mentioned above collaborated with Miles from times to times. The result is a completely personal interpretation of a classical piece of music, that for sure stands at least as equal to the original concerto. Gill's orchestration throughout is ideal(I love those bell chimes... Read review

Guitar music for any occasion
Review of Rodrigo Y Gabriela (+DVD) - Rodrigo Y Gabriela by mettrick

Advantages: Blend of heavy metal and latin guitar styles produces an excellent sound
Disadvantages: Entirely instumental so not for the lyric orientated

...Ok, as a guitar player and a fan of great rock music I was a bit sceptical about listening to an instrumental spanish guitar album. I admit I wasn't expecting to like it. Let's just say how wrong I was! This is guitar music for guitar players but also doubles as great background music for any occasion. I don't know anyone who has listened to this album in my presence and asked for it to be switched off. Now to the tracks. One thing that modern rock lacks is the flashing of guitar proficiency. This album has guitar proficiency by the bucket load. The music is typically fast paced and rhythmic. The two players rodrigo and gabriela play together seamlessly with rodrigo providing the introcate melodies and gabriela providing the wall of sound that make up the rhythmic strumming sections of each track. Tamucan is the first track (and also... Read review
