AwayFrom Her is the writing and directorial debut of Sarah Polley, a surprising turn considering her previous body of work (acting in Go, and Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead remake). Perhaps more surprisingly, Polley has, in her first attempt at an endeavour such as this, crafted a mature, unrelenting effort at exploring the difficulties of dealing with Alzheimer's.
When we first meet the couple concerned - Frank (Gordon Pinsent), and Fiona (Julie Christie), unless you've read a synopsis of the film, you may be somewhat unsure as to which one of them is actually afflicted with Alzheimer's. The exposition to this effect consists of a number of social interactions which make it clear to us (it's Christie's character), and to this point, it's quite ...
her confusion about things he is telling her. The characters have great chemistry, and you really can see the love that Grant has for Fiona, and his hurt that she doesn't remember anything about him. "Don't Dream It's Over" is a Crowded House cover, featuring Neil Finn himself. There's also a cover version of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" recorded with Clannad.
The covers may not be original but the arrangements are fantastic.
Paul's voice is fantastic and there is a variety of tunes on this collection. There is a great in-lay card with a forward by Paul himself.
