Autumnal Thoughts Through Nostalgia
Review of Elgar: Cello Concerto; Sea Pictures by  berlioz

Advantages: It is simply one of the finest pieces of music ever written
Disadvantages: How dare you ask of any disadvantges!?!

...this his reputation was upholstered even more with his openly patriotic and pompous music of the "Cockaigne (In London Town) Overture," "In the South (Alassio) Overture", and the first of his five "Pomp and Circumstance Marches", the middle part of the first march becoming somewhat of an unofficial national anthem. He was even knighted in 1904. In this vein the composer continued until 1914 (his two symphonies, Violin Concerto, and numerous choral works being in roughly the same style) when suddenly thunder struck. TONSILS, TO BRINKWELLS AND CREATIVITY The First World War put an end to the militaristic and pompous music of Elgar of the past as inappropriate and he did little composing during the war years, with only a few songs, the rarely performed symphonic prelude "Polonia" and the cantata "The Spirit of England" consisting his... A Tuba Concerto - not a common sight
Review of British Tuba Concertos by  SScott764

Advantages: Good tuba muisc
Disadvantages: None

...movement of this concerto is much more romantic and lyrical and is a nice, peaceful, calming movement 'of exceptional lyricism and tenderness' to use the words of the composer. It appears even more peaceful when played with the other two more elaborate movements. The concerto ends with a faster movement, which although isn't as good as the previous two, is still a good enough way to finish off the concerto. The final concerto is the Tuba Concerto, Op. 46 (1980s) by John Golland. 10 - Allegro 11 - Adagio 12 - Allegro giocoso This concerto is based, especially in the first and third movements, around the interval of a perfect fourth, which in my opinion does not help give a nice sound to the concerto and this concerto is another of my least favourites and is not one that I would want to sit down and listen to. The first movement has... Read review

The Rach 2
Review of Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 2, etc by  berlioz

Advantages: One of the most Romantic concertos around, full of beautiful melodies and passion
Disadvantages: over-recorded

...by the Moscow Philharmonic Society and conducted by Alexander Siloti with Basil Sapellnikov at the piano, was a huge success. Other new works presented at the concert also included the Cello Sonata, the cantata Spring, a piano prelude in G minor and the twelve songs of Op.21. The Concerto was dedicated to Dr. Dahl, and it is through this work that his name is best remembered today. The Second Concerto is cast in C minor, and it is this work that defined the sound of Rachmaninov for years to come. Gone were the more modern aspects of his First Symphony, and instead Rachmaninov created a virtuoso concerto in the 19th century Romantic tradition of Tchaikovsky, full of pathos, heart-on-sleeve romanticism and magnificently lyrical melodies around every turn. It is this pure melodic writing that appealed to the general public and established Rachmaninov... Read review
