This review is wrtten primarly for my two younger sisters who adore McFly, personally I'm not struck on the band who appear to be a genetic hybrid of The Monkeys and Busted.
McFly appeared on the popular music scene a few months ago and aspire to do as well as Busted. Both their debut single and album smashed into the charts, being bought by screaming teeny bopper fans.
The band consists of Tom, Danny, Dougie and Harry who range from 16 to 18 years of age. They have made appearances on many popular television shows although often on children's television early in the mornings or at the weekends. It appears no self respecting human being takes this band seriously.
The first album track is their debut single Five Colours In Her Hair which sounds rather like a Monkey-esque track to me. The backing music is simple and repetitive but all credit to them it does sound as though they are real band with guitars and drums, etc. The lyrics describe a weirdo with no but five colours in her hair. Even my sisters have to admit that the lyrics are simple but this is
a feature they like as it means the song is easy to sing along to, making it catchy and a good seller.
The second track is Obviously which describes another girl who is unfortunately obviously out of their league. The backing music consists mainly of a drum beat with some guitar and possibly keyboard appearances. The vocals in this song show that at least one of the band members has some possible talent as a vocalist.
The third track is the title track Room On The Third Floor. The song begins with a serious sounding intro, again showing the possibility of talent. The song develops into a simple ballad but is spoiled by many repetitions of nah nah nah nah.
That Girl starts with a Monkeys style intro and doesn't really recover. The song describes That Girl while friends remain sceptical, but they were all stunned when 'I got that girl'. The lyrics are detailed but simple however a well played guitar solo does break the song up nicely. Hwever after the interlude That Girl was with another guy.
Track five is entitled Hypnotised and sounds like a heart felt melody. It has a country feel which is surprisingly enjoyable and sung well by the band. The lyrics give the song a ballad like quality. This may possibily be the best song on the album, the lyrics and melody fit very well together which is a rather rare occurrence with this band.
Saturday Night is a definite Monkeys cast off. Nothing can describe this song other than Monkey-esque. The lyrics describe a party on a saturday night however the lyrics are a little explicit in places, describing the places 'where everybody likes to get laid', especially when considering that the main listeners are young girls.
Met This Girl somehow sounds familiar while at the same time I can't place my finger on where is has come from. This is of course another song describing another girl, which seems to be all that the band sing about but then it must be taken into consideration they are young males.
The next track is called She Left Me and sounds like a soppy cliched classic from the 60's. There is one main vocalist throughout and the others simply repeat his lines in a high key. A keyboard gives the main melody for the song.
Down By The Lake is the track nine which is quite honestly indescribable. The lyrics are about daddy finding out that they have been making out down the lake and planning to go back when daddy's not around.
Unsaid Things reminds me of one of the former songs. However it does also provide a unique McFly sound that has not been heard until you reach track te which is a little poor.
Surfer Babe is about yet another girl, by this point I am wondering how many girls really feature in the McFly boys' lives?! This girl seems to be imaginery though as they just want to date her rather than being mid way through their relationship. This is again unlike the Monkeys or Busted sound that most of the album demonstrates.
Not Alone starts with a wonderfully emotionally sound which is only added to when the lyrics begin. Acoustic sounds and truly heart felt lyrics make this song very pleasant to listen to listen to. This is the unique style that McFly should focus on as it does wonders not only for sceptical listeners like myself but also for allowing some actual talent to show in their music. It is somewhat spoiled when the chants of nah nah nah are laid thick in the ground.
The final album track is called Broccoli. The track is as obscure as the name. Again featuring another girl.
All this band can ing about is girls and getting laid. They sound like the Monkeys and many of their songs sound as though they were produced in the sixties. Not my cup of tea at all.
Some of the band members are cute. The backing music on mot of the songs is played on real instruments and they seem to be a genuine band with guitars and drums. The tunes are catchy and easy to sing and move to.
