opera, first performed in 1819, that deserves to be better known. Derived from Sir Walter Scott's famous poem, the story concerns love both unrequited and requited amid rebellious Scottish clans, as the titular lady is wooed by two rivals while her heart is pledged to another. Given Rossini's luxuriant orchestration and emphasis on romance, one can't help feeling that the composer had the hills of Tuscany more in mind than the rugged Scottish highlands. A succession of highly chargedscenascontrast with languid melodies, such as Ellen's delightful introductory "Oh mattutini albori", making this a less bloodily melodramatic companion-piece to Donizetti's Scott-inspiredLucia di Lammermoor. This recording from Milan's La Scala was made at a live performance in 1992, though the fact is hardly evident and certainly not obtrusive (there is very little audience distraction, with applause only at the end of acts). Riccardo Muti conducts a more robust reading than Maurizio Pollini's previous studio recording (on Sony). His soloists--led by June Anderson and Rockwell Blake--tackle the extreme vocal demands of the score with evident gusto, though sometimes with less subtlety than would be evident in the studio. The result is a recording that deserves a strong recommendation on its own merits. Given both the paucity of alternative recommendations and the attractive budget price, it becomes an essential must-have. Sadly it lacks a full libretto--the only disappointment. --Mark Walker

...Intro: I bought this in Buenos Aires after hearing it played in a shop. The Gotan project cleverly uses a mixture of traditional instruments such as the violin and banadeon to create tango sounds mixted in with both electronica and modern beats to offer a new take on tango music.
Background:
Initiated by Philippe Cohen Solal and Edouardo Makaroff in 1999, with Christoph H Muller joining immediately, Gotan Project saw the light of day with the release of their first 10 inch in February 2000 on Ya Basta!, Solal's label.
The project which gathers on record, as well as on stage, top Argentinean musicians exiled in Paris, is experiencing an incredible international success with the release of their first album "La Revancha Del Tango". To date, nearly 1 000 000 records have been sold in the whole world . Their current live tour is taking...
