This collection of tribal, ambient, and folk music by Australia's aboriginal artists and ... more
tribes is an interesting snapshot of the various indigenous faces of Australia. Listeners will find much of the famed didgeridoo, sometimes as the cornerstone for tribal dreamtime rituals, sometimes leading the melodies in modern electronic pop music, sometimes setting the dark, ominous tone for ambient music. Highlights include Archie Roach's melodic folk tune "Native Born", a sweet lament about the loss of aboriginal land and culture; Gapu's "Celebration" with Rachel Nehanda Woods's lovely chant; and Ruby Hunter's "Kurongk Boy, Kurongk Girl". But make no mistake, the Rough Guide folks include enough traditional tribal chant to please those looking for authentic Australian aboriginal music. An excellent, comprehensive introduction. --Karen Karleski

Advantages: great selection, good variety Disadvantages: somehow mistitled, mostly traditional stuff
RoughGuide, best known for their budget travel guides, has been steadily expanding in other areas, and has been responsible for quite a few musical "guides" over the years.
This 1998 album, marketed as "RoughGuideto the Music of Eastern Europe", does pretty much exactly what is says on the package: provides quite a wide ranging overview of folk and (occasionally) folk-inspired music of Eastern Europe. This is an album that pretty much started my liking for "world music" coming from my part of the world, and despite its age it remains a good compilation which really does showcase the variety of what's on offer quite well.
One thing that this "RoughGuide" album needs is perhaps a better definition of what is considered Eastern Europe: this is a surprisingly woolly category (I always remember somebody commenting than Poland ...
Advantages: A Good general travel guide Disadvantages: Nothing really
bought this book from the airport departure lounge,so very little thought went into it, we just went for the only Paris specific guide there was! However, we wern't disappointed. It is a comprehensive guide covering: Basic information useful before you go, a small phrase book section, maps (including metro maps) and a guideto the sites, hotels, bars and restauraunts. The guidesto the museums and sights were particularly useful, especially the guideto the Louvre. We were a bit pushed for time and so it gave us a chance to plan our trip to include the bits we really wanted to see.
We tried 2 of the restauraunts listed, and, as expected the descriptions were fairly accurate. The restauraunt on the Champs-Elysee (sorry, the name escapes me) was picturesque and plesant but very touristy (as the book suggested).
I felt that the level ...
Advantages: Chatty, friendly style. Informative Disadvantages: Not a technical 'manual'
terms of disadvantages, if you want an all-singing, all-dancing 'technical manual' with photos and diagrams, this isn't for you.
I'd recommend The RoughGuideto Pregnancy and Birth highly and if you're about to join the Kid Club you'd be well served in picking up a copy.
