character of the last 50 years of South African jazz music. It succeeds in 16 tracks without recourse to novelty tunes or anything overfamiliar, and includes music from Abdullah Ibrahim, Miriam Makeba and Chris McGregor, of course, and artists as diverse as the forward-looking flautist Deepak Ram, the spiritually inclined pianist Bheki Mseleku and the deceptively untraditional Sheer All Stars. It's fascinating to unpick the African and the American influences in the music of a country that began to incorporate transatlantic music as early as 1900, from the commercial (Sipho Mabuse), the traditional (the Jazz Epistles) and the singular (Thelani Ajb). What's more, this enhanced CD includes some extraordinarily detailed notes on South African music and essential travel information, too. --Neil Bennun

Advantages: Great album, great fusion, great story. Disadvantages: Quailty not entirely held throughout album
...- meaning both "good" in Nuer and "power" in Arabic. The is the most immediate and catchy record on the album; I bought the album having heard it on the Warchild record. For this reason, as well as its message of peace in Sudan, it has featured in various similar compilations, including the RoughGuide to Sudan. A great antidote to the mellowing calmer tracks that precede it.
The final four tracks continue with similar collaborations, but are much more celebratory, upbeat and cheerful. Reflecting the change in Sudan, including the 2005 peace deal, where both artists performed, it promises a bright, peaceful future for the Sudanese people. Whilst not quite living up to the power of the first half of the album, perhaps lacking an impact track like Gua or Aiwa, it is a good ending and one that leaves the listener brimming with optimism...

Advantages: its good if your into pop music Disadvantages: its not good if your into any other type of music
...when i heard they were bringing yet another now compilation album i was gob smacked because i think its about time they stopped bringing them out .they are ok but when they are bringing this many out its just wasteing the buyers money.this one i found fairly decent concidering i prefer rock and indie music.you do actually get value for money with this product.i think they should stop bringing these now albums out because they are just full of the same crap everytime you listen to one.If you like your pop music fair enough go and buy it but its not my cup of tea at all.they should start mixing them up with rock music and other genres.they could call it now rock and so on for the other genres....

Advantages: CONTAINS ALL SONGS FROM THE FILM Disadvantages: WEAK BONUS TRACK
...If you enjoyed the film you'll love the CD. If you haven't seen the film and you're age 5 to 14 you'll probably still love it. It has all the main songs from the film, including both versions of You are the Music in Me by Troy & Gariella and Sharpay. The bonus track is weird but the 10 other songs justified the cost of the CD without worring about the bonus track. Very popular with all the girls at my daughters' primary school but unsure if it is as popular with older children. Despite that i have to admit that it is also very popular with their forty-two year old mother! An ideal Christmas present or stocking filler if they haven't got it already....
