Advantages: Not well known but is an important bridge in the historic cycle Disadvantages: Not well known and quite dated
-disc box set is part of the complete set of operas recorded by the D?OylyCarteOpera Company and released by DECCA. John Reed gives a creditable account of the grizzled King Gama ? you can almost hear him leer in that ?celebrated sneer?. The other soloists are in good voice and the orchestra is in its usual sparkling form.
The second CD is completed with a performance of the Pineapple Poll ballet suite. This is a pot pourri of snatches of tunes taken from the operas and put together into a short (45 minute) dance story in three scenes. Mackerras notes that it was not unusual for Sullivan to recycle motifs himself. The whole work is a good ?music quiz? for Savoyards and the insert booklet identifies the individual sources for when you get stuck.

SYDNEY OPERAHOUSE
Sydney Operahouse is located on the eastern headland of Circular Quay just a few minutes from the train station. It is made up of 1,056,000 Swedish tiles on the roof, which are off white and are self-cleaning. His son comes to Australia to oversee any developments. It was finally was completed against all odds and after several disagreements in 1973. It now is one ...

Advantages: Beautifully produced, top quality singing Disadvantages: None
of work was done in the refurbishment to ensure that the acoustic properties of the theatre were the best they could possibly be and I certainly have no complaints. Even right up in the Gods I've never had a problem hearing the singers. The singers themselves are world class and you know you're going to be in for a treat. The orchestra is one of the best I have heard and the productions are generally pretty traditional but very lavish. On seeing La Boheme last week I was particularly taken by the beautiful set, complete with gently falling snow in Act 3.
I absolutely adore every visit I have made to the RoyalOperaHouse - the venue is beautiful and the singing and productions are among the best you will see in the UK. The productions they put on I would say are fairly conservative - the usual "classics", Mozart, Puccini, Verdi, Wagner - but ...
