It was with a great sadness that I heard of the passing of John Entwistle the inspirational Bass Player from The Who. Any of you who have heard this man play will know that he was at one with and a part of the bass he played. Listen to My Generation, its raw alive but now sadly he’s gone but he lives on within the music of The Who.
There was and is in my opinion one other who was, indeed is a contender for the accolade of the greatest Bass man of all times. A man who has survived as a founder member of a group that has changed line up a myriad of times, a group who have changed from Blues to Soft Rock, a group that evolved in the 60’s. Who is this man, who is the Group?
The man is John McVie and the group Fleetwood Mac and the album Rumours. The following op was written as my entry for the 29th_Candidates “Dinosaur Rock-Off” a tribute to the memory off rock legend, John Entwistle, recently departed bass player of The Who, and a true artist in every sense of the word.
Rumours hit the shops in 1977, a year that was to see the death of The King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. The US space shuttle Enterprise flew for the first time and cinema was changed forever with the release of Star Wars. Across the UK street parties were celebrating the Queens Silver Jubilee and me
well I celebrated a day off and got absolutely bloatered while listening to Rumours and ended up shouting for huey and to day this day I have never forgot either, or the bolognaise that caused the problem.
The line up of Fleetwood Mac at the time was Mick Fleetwood, John and Christine McVie, Stevie Nicks and Lyndsey Buckingham, the line up arguably being the most successful of any during the groups history. The McVie’s were in the middle of a bitter divorce and long time lovers Nicks and Buckingham were also in the midst of a break up and from this spawned perhaps the best album they have ever produced, Rumours.
Comprising eleven tracks of pure gold, Rumours remained at No1 in the US billboard charts for a mammoth 31 weeks, listen to it if you can and you will I hope understand why. If not let me guide you through it, or if you are curious go to one of the many sites such as Amazon were you can preview the album before buying.
<<< Second hand News >>>
“I know there’s nothing to say Someone has taken my place” “I’m just second hand news”
Without a doubt the weakest song on the album this track was penned by Lyndsey Buckingham detailing his break with Stevie Nicks.
<<< Dreams >>>
“Now here you go again You say you want your freedom Well who am I to keep you down”
This was Fleetwood Macs only No1 single and one of my personal favourites, written by the gorgeous Stevie Nicks. A sad slow haunting melancholy song brought to life by Stevie’s incredible vocals backed by a strong bass line, its unmissable.
<<< Never Going Back Again >>>
“She broke down and let me in Made me see where I’ve been”
A strange little track, with guitar as sole accompaniment to Lyndsey Buckingham’s vocals.
<<< Don’t Stop >>>
“Open your eyes and look at the day You’ll see things in a different way”
Great duet from Nicks and Buckingham, who would have thought they were breaking up.
<<< Go Your Own Way >>>
Perhaps the most commercial of all the tracks with Lyndsey Buckingham on lead guitar and vocals with perhaps his best offering of any from his time with Fleetwood Mac, his style of guitar playing unique and yet classic.
<<< Songbird >>>
“For you, there’ll be no more crying For you, the sun will be shining”
Christine McVie solos on one of her own compositions, a sad romantic song much appealing to me.
<<< The Chain >>>
“And if you don’t love me now You will never love me again”
Without a doubt the highlight of the album, a powerful track both instrumentally and vocally, indeed the Bass line showing McVie’s mastery is apparent, John Entwistle himself would I’m sure have been proud of the outcome. So good was it that for many years the instrumental section using the Bass as lead with percussion back up became the theme to the BBC show Top Gear.
<<< You Make Loving Fun >>>
“Sweet wonderful you You make me happy with the things you do”
Christine McVie again over a wall of sound created by keyboard, bass and lead guitar, a timeless classic.
<<< I Don’t want To Know >>>
“I don’t want to know the reason why Love keeps right on walking down the line”
Another Stevie Nicks composition again with McVie on Bass taking the lead in a fast moving number. Nicks and Buckingham form a duet with close harmonies.
<<< Oh Daddy >>>
“Oh Daddy You soothe me with your smile”
A slow lilting sad melody sung on the back of a strong bass line.
<<< Gold Dust Woman >>>
“Rock on gold dust woman Take your silver spoon And dig you grave”
Penned by Stevie Nicks and rumoured to be about her decline into the shadow world of drugs, who knows it is Nicks at her best.
Rumours was released during a period within my life when things were stable, I was content and happy, there were no undue stresses and it’s strange to say on reflection that an album charting the decline of relationships should have such an impact on me, when I was happy within mine, Here I am twenty five years later, I still play it all the time especially in the car and it is still as fresh today as it was then, every time I listen to it I find something new, a little harmony, a guitar riff, I don’t think I will ever tire of it or know it all.
And the dinosaurs, well they are not extinct yet, they have recently finished recording again sadly missing Christine McVie who decided to call it a day but the line up has been re enhanced by the return of Lyndsey Buckingham. There is a new album due in 2003 and a greatest hits album in time for Christmas of this year. It’s a tragedy that we lost John Entwistle but great that we still have others from the same mould.

Advantages: An uplifting, deep feeling mix of sensational songs. Recorded during a time of considerable stress for all concerned. It is the benchmark upon which albums should be produced. Disadvantages: It is a flawless album, especially now that the digitally enhanced CD/DVD version has been produced. There is not a song, nor a vocal nor a sound that is out of place.
Advantages: A long awaited event in the rock firmament ? a new studio album by one of the mega-names of rock. They are now on tour ? coming to the UK in November Disadvantages: Good in part. It?s a marathon ? and feels like it by the end.
