be among them. The Runaway Foundis an arrestingly epic and assured debut, unmistakably like the work of a young band who instinctively understand that the only stakes worth playing for are the stars or bust. The Veils aspire, unashamedly, to the company of a peer group including the Verve, Radiohead, Coldplay and Muse: this is big, sweeping, serious music made by men who nigh certainly wear long black overcoats in the middle of summer. The good news is that the Veils appear to possess the ability to match their aspirations. The best tracks onThe Runaway Found--the fragile, Smiths-like opener "The Wild Son" and the faintly Blue Nile-ish "Lavinia"--display a rare knack for melody and arrangement, and singer Finn Andrews has been blessed with an odd but startlingly expressive voice, approximately equal parts Jeff Buckley and Ian McCulloch. --Andrew Mueller

This album is simply beutiful. It takes you on a journey, and provides a fitting sound track to life. Written by a lad of just 19 years of age, it is definately an album before its time, which might explain why it never gained the regonition it should have.

A lot better than The Veils second attempt at an album, which I might say was a little too chalenging, this album is music in its purest form.

There is a chance a you may end up in tears by the end of this album, but good tears. Though being so brilliant an album, it can be a little too easy to listen to, and like many albums of the sort, it might end up a bit over played, but still an album that you might flick past in a years time and exclaim "I love this song" and the memories will come flooding back.

Album Notes
This 2004 Rough Trade debut by the Veils showcases a sound born out of English post-punk and 1990s American alt-rock. Fronted by guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter Finn Andrews (son of Barry Andrews of XTC and Shriekback fame), the Veils feature his throaty, impassioned vocals and emo-leaning songsmithery as their focus. On THE RUNAWAY FOUND, the band delivers on the promise of its stylistic amalgam. Andrews flirts with British jangle-pop on cuts such as "The Wild Son" and "The Tide That Left and Never Came Back," rocks hard on the angst-laden "More Heat Than Light," and tries his hand at melancholic balladry on "The Valleys of New Orleans." Crypto-poetic lyrics and interlocking guitar lines bolstered by clean, large-scale production (by Suede's Bernard Butler on four tracks) lend atmosphere to Andrews's tunes, as do the tastefully applied strings, giving the Veils a Radiohead-esque rock aura.
