Well I’ve been looking for ideas for my next op today and managed to resist the lure of another challenge!!! I mean there really can’t be much more to tell you all about myself. So whilst driving home from Work I decided that my next op had to be a follow up to a previous one. Back in February I did an op on Coldplay’s debut album and intended to follow it up straight away with the second, but of course I ended up getting side tracked and never did.
So here we go A Rush Of Blood To The Head is the second album from British band Coldplay. Of course the task of following up Parachutes would be no easy feet and bettering it would be even harder but that’s just what Coldplay have managed to do. They album has also helped them to break into the American market a lot quicker and easier than bands like Oasis and Blur.
The album kicks off with “Politik” a very catchy song with a loud drum beat intro before the quieter vocals come in. Quickly grabs your attention and draws you into the Coldplay sound. It mixes the heavier side to Coldplay with the Mellower parts that anyone who heard Parachutes will be expecting from Coldplay. A good steady drumbeat through out the song and the guitars and keyboard really help to make the vocals stand out.
The second song is the first single to have been taken from the album “In My Place”.
As this was the first thing anyone heard from the album it proved that Coldplay might just have gone one better than the debut album. Again starts off with the drumbeat before being joined by guitars and keyboard for a long intro before the vocals come in. Another very mellow but superb sounding song, which will be superb at V festival this year as it sounds like it was actually written more for Live occasions.
Next up comes “God Put A Smile Upon Your Face”, which starts with an acoustic guitar before the vocals come in quite quietly. When the drums come in the song starts to pick up a bit of speed but keeps the mellow sound and keeps the beat of the song superbly before it builds into a sublime chorus. Upon my first listen to this album this song quickly emerged as one of my favourite tracks. The acoustic guitar continues throughout the song and makes a big impact.
We then move onto the second single to be taken off the album “The Scientist”. This song starts with a piano building up a little before the quiet vocals come in again for another superb song. Shades of Yellow can be seen in this song and if you liked that then you will love this. The piano takes on a long part of this song as the backing for the vocals. The guitars and drums don’t come in till about half way through the song, which gives a very peaceful sound and melody to this song.
Next up is the forthcoming single “Clocks”, another song that starts with a piano but the guitars and drums come in a lot quicker this time. A little bit more up-beat than the last few songs and beautiful, harmonic vocals as the song drifts along peacefully. One of those songs that as you are listening to it really passes you by without you really noticing but you know its been there and that it was superb. When I first heard this I didn’t actually expect it to be a single but simply a track on the album that only people who bought it would get to hear.
After Clocks, comes “Daylight” another calm, relaxing intro, which really sounds like it may have just missed out on being included on Parachutes. It’s another song with a superb beat and vocals that sort of sound a bit spooky but really suit the song. It’s one of those songs that had I heard it 5 or 6 years ago would have made me want to start learning guitar while I was still at school just so I could play this song.
That’s followed up by a track that sounds a bit like the start to High Speed on the first album. A slow acoustic guitar rift with the quiet vocals from Martin are a superb introduction into “Green Eyes”. A very calming song again with a very mellow vibe that carries on the sound of a superb album. Builds up a little as you get into the song but still has a very relaxed feel about it.
The mellow them continues with “Warning Signs” a superb song that is no doubt a certain single. A slow beat brings us into this one before Martin’s vocals come in. A very touching song, but again so relaxing that it’s ideal to just close your eyes lie back on your bed and drift away. It’s one of those songs, which everyone will love and no one could really get sick of. He’s obviously talking about how much he misses someone and what it has done to him since perhaps say, they split up.
Well with only three tracks to go we get to a little bit more upbeat with “A Whisper”. The song starts with the guitar and a steady quiet drumbeat with Chris Martin quietly saying Whisper over the top of it before he comes in with another line over the top. The guitars hold the song well, however after a point the lyrics become a little harder to work out and you just end up tapping your foot away in time to the song.
Following on from that comes the albums title track “A Rush Of Blood To The Head”. It starts with the vocals alone before the guitars come in for this very thought provoking song. This is probably my favourite on the album and builds nicely from the opening bars to the chorus where the drums come in to keep time and a beat. This is one of those tracks it’s hard to explain why you like it but when people listen to it they just seem to agree.
To finish the album is the superb “Amsterdam”. The song starts with the piano before the vocals come in sounding a bit stretched although quiet. The first verse only contains the piano and vocals, which Martin does himself and works brilliantly as a solo effort. The backing vocals in places do help the song a little as you do feel something else is maybe needed in places as Martin and his Piano continue on their own. Only when the rest of the band join in though do you feel that this is actually a Coldplay song, but its a superb way to finish the album.

Well its true Coldplay have managed to make a decent follow up to the debut album Parachutes and dare I say may have even bettered it. If you liked any of the singles from Coldplay and weren’t sure about buying the album trust me its all along the same lines and as good so take the chance and buy it. The album of course is available from all good stores starting at £9.99and www.CD-wow.com for £8.99, enjoy.

Advantages: Accoustic harmonies and easy to listen to songs.Sincere and heartfelt lyrics. A really nice album. Disadvantages: I didnt like it as much as X&Y or A Sudden Rush of Blood to the Head.
