Advantages: Wonderful, lyrical music
Disadvantages: if you're not romantic at heart!

...My enthusiasm for Glazunov has been shared with you before, but this is the one I’ve been waiting for. The second concerto is wonderful. Brahms’ 2nd and Chopin’s 2nd seen through the eyes of a Russian Romantic – what more could you want! This music is utterly charming, tuneful and unpretentious – the latter an unusual trait in a concerto – and will improve any day or night, no matter how you feel. The 1st is the longer and well worth hearing, and there is a compilation set of variations from a number of Russian contemporaries that, if not up to the standard of the Diabelli, is none the worse for that. There are very few alternatives for this music and now there is no reason to deny yourself the pleasures that are to be found; you will not be disappointed.... Read review

Darkness, darkness.
Review of Televise - Calla by JonnyOpinion

Advantages: sinister, juicy, evil, sad, underground.
Disadvantages: guilty, evil, putrid, and some of the tracks are a bit too long.

...There's something about bands with three people in them - just a guitarist, bassist and a singer - that means their music has to be sinister and suspicious. An obvious comparison here would be Dark Star's (see?) 1999 album, "Twenty Twenty Sound", to which Calla's "Televise" relates as greasy trench-coated uncle does to his 14 year-old nephew. There's something not quite right about it. Every track is slow, dense and soupy. The singer's voice is deep, smooth yet oddly sexless, conjuring up images of watching television with one-eyed Russians at night on some freezing cold oil rig. The guitars and bass are intricate, even a little smarmy in their "I'm over 30 but still in a fashionable band"-esque fingerings; the drums are methodical but also organic. It's not an album to listen to in the daylight; definitely not in the sunshine. It... Read review

Advantages: excellant laid back music
Disadvantages: none

...released in 1995 this shows while Van Morrisson may no longer be the cutting edge musically he's still able to produce strong albums with crafted lyrics and polished performances and production. Reading the track listing - Russian Roulette, raincheck, No religion, underlying depression, i'll never be free melanholia you'd be forgiven that you were about to listen to a very depressing album but in fact the jazzy playing style ,which sometimes crosses into pure late night blues, ensures that this is an uplifting experience with the blues seen off. The 2 stand out tracks are perfect fit an uptempo number and you dont know me - a ballard sung with his daughter both of which would belong in a best of collection. If you're feeling mellow - check it out... Read review
