Past Masters: A Beatles compilation
Review of Past Masters Vol.1 - Beatles (The) by  Dizzy_Lizzy

Advantages: It's the Beatles, previously unavailable on CDs, no bad tracks
Disadvantages: none

...nice harmonies. I really hope there is no one out there who hasn't heard "I Want To Hold Your Hand." This is the one that set Beatlemania in motion in America. The music and vocals are perfect, with George doing some great work on his electric guitar. The handclaps are a nice touch, too. This was one of the small number of Lennon-McCartney tunes that was written by both Paul and John, and of course they share lead vocal duties. Oh, and incidentally, this is the first stereo track on "Past Masters Volume One"; the five preceding tracks are all mono. "This Boy" was the B side of "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and was recorded on the same day - October 17, 1963. The three-part harmonies by John, Paul and George were rarely better, and John's emotional solo during the bridge is breathtaking. The guitars on this song are outstanding, and Ringo... Read review

An interesting collection of overlooked show songs
Review of Best Of Off Broadway, The - Various Artists by  DavidBedford

Advantages: An interesting collection of songs
Disadvantages: Too short! And not everything will be to everyone's taste.

...wrote it (Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty) went on to write 'Ragtime', one of Broadway's best shows from the 1990s. Always interesting to hear 'star' composers' early work, and this song was what caused me to pick up a complete recording of 'Lucky Stiff' (though not the one this track comes from), which is a delight. And then we have the very silly 'Dear Mr. Gershwin' from 'Radio Gals', a song where a waitress recalls a mundane yet emotional encounter with George Gershwin. By turns silly and wistful, this is a very enjoyable song. After these three tracks, the disc takes another dip, with songs that I can respect but find it hard to really enjoy. 'Back and Forth' is a song about several characters' thoughts while in a rocking chair. It's from 'Bed and Sofa', apparently a stage version of a Russian silent film. Operatic in feel, I... Makes you wear a smile
Review of You're Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile - Jason Graae by  DavidBedford

Advantages: Mix of ballads and silly songs, engaging performance
Disadvantages: Some weak orchestration here and there

...It's a Charles Strouse album! Possibly THE Charles Strouse album. Most of the time, when musical theatre stars, or other artists for that matter, record an album devoted to the work of one composer, the composer in question will be Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Stephen Sondheim or Andrew Lloyd Webber. So a Charles Strouse album is a nice change, but who is he? He's a prolific composer for the musical stage, but only two of his shows have achieved lasting success - Bye, Bye Birdie and the huge hit Annie. Often a very bouncy composer, he can also write some lovely ballads, and both sides of his talent are displayed by Jason Graae on this album. Strouse has worked with quite a number of different lyricists - five wordsmiths, including Strouse himself, are credited on the album's track listing. Again, I can hear people saying 'who...
