Metallica's finest songs, all together on one double CD album, what could be better? Well for some fans this album was a bit of a letdown. The songs are still their in essence, but things have changed. The added orchestral support does make this entire album very melodic, and to be honest this really doesn't suit some Metallica songs, such as Fuel and Battery, in fact it completely slaughters them. It doesn't sound like metallica being true to who they are. Aside from this if you are an avid fan you will enjoy this album anyway. It does have to be said however, that since it is live, Hetfield's voice does sound a bit old and used, which doesn't help the feeling that Metallica is going down in a slow painful spiral.
The two completely new tracks are good, but it has to be pointed out that they were wqritten with the orchestra in mind, and as a concequence fit together well but completely miss the Metallica - thrash/metal image.
The guitar solos are still there and when the guitar solos kick in it does seem that Metallica aren't dead yet. Probably my favourite track on the album is Until it sleeps, although Sad but true comes close, with it's powerful guitar and meaingful lyrics.
In summary this album is a good choice for hardcore fans, but isn't a very good introduction to the real Metalica. Some of the older fans who remeber Kill 'Em All may feel a little cheated by this album as it is unlike every other album. It does have to be said though, that the idea is daring and mostly well pulled off.

I can't begin to imagine how Metallica and an orchestra together would sound. Certainly an interesting concept !!

I thought this was an amazing, amazing album myself but agree it wasn't to all fans' tastes! A bit more track info and detail on this review would be good, cause there's loads you might not expect to find there...otherwise great!
