Where exactly James, Lars and Co. got the idea to do this I don’t know (Well, actually I do – Conductor Michael Kamen contacted the band and suggested it) – but I’m glad they did. It’s very rare that a live album manages to capture the energy of the actual performance but Bob Rock, the producer, has managed it. Metallica, not reputed for being the fastest writer’s of songs even managed to pen two new songs to play with the orchestra.
In the main the songs work well with the orchestra, especially the older songs. For Whom the Bell Tolls and Call of The Ktulu being particularly good examples. With Fuel and Until It Sleeps (Despite a promising intro) coming off worse with the orchestra. The two new songs, No Leaf Clover and Minus Human (- Human) are both fantastic, especially compared to most of the tracks of ReLoad. I only wish I could have been there to watch it myself, though now they finally got round to releasing a DVD of the concert I will get the chance!

I borrowed this off a friend, and totally hated it! It seems as though Metallica don't really know what they want to do anymore. To me the orchestration did little more than get in the way of the good songs.
