Simply stunning is how to describe this album. Until now I did not understand how a double CD could roll out hit songs, one after another. Each song on here, is a masterpiece in itself and it holds t he classics such as 'Of Wolf and Man' which will always be one of my favourites as well many others I suppose. It has all the premier songs from all the albums, compiling an amazing set of songs.
When you first heard that Metallica would present an album with a symphony, it is natural to be skeptical and joke a bit. But I reckon everyone was hit back, once they heard this work of art. The symphony heightened the atmosphere and the crowd captured the emotion and love for the songs.
I will try to describe a select number of songs to give you a taster of this album!
In 'MEMORY REMAINS' -
I thought it was an okay song from their previous album, but this ambum does this song so much justice and it really redeeems it to legendary status. The atmosphere created was breathless. The crowd participation, added an eerie conotation to it and added dimensions to the song, that you would have never guessed was there. Hetfield's voice also was sung so passionately, and the wavering in his voice were so cool.
In 'OF WOLF OR MAN' -
it really swept me away. This had originally been one of my favourite songs of Metallica's for years, but again the S&M version made it even more special to me. The music sounded more distorted and atmospheric, which was perfect for the imagery in this song. The added vocal treats Hetfield did was great and at the end he does like this wolf call thing, which was so cool and it was reflected with the roar of the audience. The live element really did make this song even more powerful and emotional, which you feel instantly when the strong drum beat enters you into a 3 dimensional song!
'NO LEAF CLOVER' -
is one of those 'new' songs, along with human, which is only featured on this album. I was initially wary, because I was deeply disappointed with 'I want to disappear' on the MI2 soundtrack. But this is a great song! It is really complex and have so many messages in it. The use of the language suggests death coming towards you, but with the description of 'like a freight train coming your way', suggests that death will hit you hard and fast when you come but 'there is a light at the end of the tunnel' and there is salvation. It is a relaxing song, as well as extremely powerful, delivering a satisfying feel to it with, as always, an amazing and admirable play of instruments.
The orchestra throughout, add such depth and dimensions to the music, with the accompanent of strings and so forth, it can be definately described as a masterpiece indefinately.
Metallica will always be legendary and we all know that, but they have to be when they produce such stunning records like this. Many other songs from the 'Black' album are done live and they sound even better, with Hetfield's stunning voice.
This album proves that metallica are worthy of a legendary status and this latest album only shows they will never burn out. A truly legendary album and band of our time, guaranteed.
This is a captivating album. Despite initial reservations about the fusion of thrash and classical, this really does work and the final article is simply awesome. If this is not in your CD collection you are missing out. Nice review, thanks.

I agree with all you say and will add that the change from Call of Katulu to Master of Puppets makes the hairs stand on the back of my neck !
