A fine showcase of Stanford's great music

Advantages: Well-balance compilation, excellent artistry, well-recorded

...Charles Stanford is one of the great English choral composers and this third volume of his sacred works continues to pay great homage to this. Sung by the choir of Winchester Cathedral the musical capability of the artists is not in doubt, and they do great justice to the works. Throughout these pieces the organ accompaniment of Stephen Farr is exemplary, and well balanced with the choral sound. This compilation contains a nice mix of tracks. As well as the Evening Services, there are a number of anthems and several extended pieces (St. Patrick's Breastplate, For Lo, I Raise Up). The Evening Services in C and B flat reflect Stanford's great ability to bring life to the magnificat and nunc dimittis. With such frequently sung words this is a difficult enough achievement, yet here we hear voices that soar with dynamism and grace... Read review

A mixed mess of good and bad
Review of Mozart 250th Anniversary Edition - Complete Sacred Works by  rwjkelly

Advantages: Every sacred music by Mozart in 1 boxset
Disadvantages: Not the best available

...-executed performances. (for more details on period music - see my review on Haydn's Creation). The Works: There are over 3 dozen works here, so I won't mention them all. The Requiem is quite different to most other recordings I have heard. The Dies Irea (played and imitated in god knows how many films) is taken quite slowly, a change from the usual bash-it-out-as-loud-and-quickly-as-possible approach that other orchestras follow, and the Hostias is very well performed. The Sanctus is played as grandly as ever, whilst the Benedictus is sublime. Great Mass The Gloria as to be heard to be believed - i have never heard it performed in the manner performed here. It takes your breath away! The choir literally shout it all out at the top of their voices with particular emphasis on the word "excelsis". Coronation Mass The Agnus Dei solo is sung... Read review

One Sacred Hour
Review of Chase The Dragon - Magnum by  steerpyke

...are in the predictable realms of the rock ballad, bang...big guitars and big vocals steal the song and bring it back to the familiar Magnum territory. In the quieter moments the keyboard meanders through, having taken on the guise of a harpsicord, that Englishness in their music coming to the fore. MArk Stanways opportunity to show his talent comes in the form of Sacred Hour which opens with a mix of keyboards. Sounding like a one man orchestra in a concert hall he ranges from mellow to epic and back agin before laying off the volume to let Bob Catleys voice to shine through. The song is a tribute and homage to the feeling dirived from playing live music, the hopes and fears pinned on a performance and the realisation that all of those years of hard work do finally pay off in that one sacred hour that the band are on stage.
