Advantages: Nice relaxing feel to the album. Disadvantages: Not all will appreciate this style of music
Sailing to Philadelphia is Mark Knopflers second solo Album attempt, from the man who brought you Dire Straits. His first solo album Golden Heart in 1996 and now his second solo album is here for our hearing pleasure. Sailing to Philadelphia is a great album, but is far different from the Dire Straits albums and the first solo album Golden Heart.
The first track is "What it is". Personally I love this track which shows you ... ...the guitar should be played with complete emotion and devotion. I would say this is easy listening, as you'd probably listen to it in the car driving home when your all cosy in your car, and its windy and raining outside. I won't cover all the tracks, just a few as I think it would take forever.

The first track is "What it is". Personally I love this track which shows you how Mark has matured over the years to show how the guitar should be played with complete emotion and devotion. I would say this is easy listening, as you'd probably listen to it in the car driving home when your all cosy in your car, and its windy and raining outside. I won't cover all the tracks, just a few as I think it would take forever.
An increasing array of instruments are in the album, like the irish pipes, tin whistle, piano-accordian and fiddle. In some songs an Irish feel is present, like celtic perhaps. In the track "sailing to Philadelphia" there is a true folky style which is quite distinctive. Van Morrison makes a guest apperance in the track "The last laugh" which really combines the singing talents of Morrison and the unmistakeable sound of Mark's Gibson Les Paul singing out the solo licks will be music to the ears of any Guitar player. Mark's facination with America shines through with this album, with quite a lot of reference been made to the States.
When Mark Knopfler was a journalist for the Evening Post in Leeds in his 20s, he was interviewing two ladies who were performing at the Leeds City Varieties. He started writing a song, say 30 years ago, and has now finished it after all these years and it made it onto the album, it is called "One More Matinee". This song is quite different and you may not like it at first like me, but it grows on you. It has on me as I've learnt to play this song myself on the guitar.
From a guy that has a unique talent, and composes music for top films now, and also had the biggest band in the world with Dire Straits, this is music at its best. ENJOY!
MarkKnopfler's new album - "SailingtoPhiladelphia" is his second solo album, the first was called "Golden Heart". Both seem to have been released with minimal publicity.
This album's got a country and blues feel with, of course, Knopflers unmistakable guitar. It also features duets with Van Morrison - "The Last Laugh" and James Taylor on the title track.
There's nothing new or exciting in this album, but most people wouldn't expect that from Knopfler. Still, its a professional, accomplished album. If you still like Dire Straits - especially the Love Over Gold type stuff, you'll like this album. ...
Advantages: A lovely duet with James Taylor Disadvantages: Flat and repetitive
I have always been a fan of MarkKnopfler, both in his days of Dire Straits and as a solo artist. So I anxiously awaited the release of his second solo album, SailingtoPhiladelphia. I actually pre-ordered it from Amazon, so that I would receive it on the day of release. After his prior album, Golden Heart, which is one of my favourites and which I had to buy twice, since my children permanently borrowed it, I was sure this would be among my favourites.
Wrong!
Don't get me wrong, it's fine, but it is nothing exciting. It sounds like MarkKnopfler, like always. He has that very distinguishable voice and guitar sound. But it is flat and monotonous, not even the musicians excite me.
There are a couple of redeeming tracks. The first being the beautiful title track, SailingtoPhiladelphia. On this, Knopfler duets with James ...
Dire Straits are for me the best musical group of the world.
Their music is a sweet pop and often also country.
Their best song is, for me, certainly “Sultans of swing”: pure and sweet music;when I I listen to it I think to stay in a dream…fantastic!
Between their songs I remember “Romeo and Juliet”, “Brothers in arms” and “Communiquè”.
The band was:
MarkKnopfler (Vocals, lead and rhythm guitars), David Knopfler (Rhythm guitar and vocals), John Illsley (bass and vocals) and Pick Withers (drums).
Today there is only MarkKnopfler as singer: very good is the album “SailingToPhiladelphia” and “Wag the dog”, the sound track of a film with Robert Redford.
Dire Straits, for my opinion, are the pop – rock band most famous up to 1984-1985.

Album Notes
Having crafted such a singular sound for himself both in Dire Straits and as a respected film composer, it's gratifying to hear that Mark Knopfler's consummate musicianship has only gotten better on what is only his second solo album in a career that began in the mid- '70s. For SAILING TO PHILADELPHIA, Knopfler once again looks to America for inspiration, starting with the stirring title track that draws from Thomas Pynchon's fictionalized account of English adventurers/surveyors Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon and which finds James Taylor playing Mason to Knopfler's Dixon. Other numbers benefiting from this American muse are the ethereal "Sands of Nevada", the Farfisa-driven "Do America" and the low-key "Prairie Wedding" (featuring alt country stalwarts Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, who also appear on the chugging "Speedway At Nazareth"). Elsewhere, Knopfler entertains a host of famous friends throughout a slew of tasty tracks. Van Morrison duets on the laid-back "The Last Laugh" while Squeeze's Chris Difford and Glen Tilbrook add harmonies to the nostalgic twang of "Silvertown". The most impressive cameo comes from famed bluegrass fiddler Aubrey Haynie whose playing fuses with Knopfler's fat guitar tone to transform the crackling "What It Is" into the quintessential Dire Straits song.
