Review of Rutland Boughton: Bethlehem by ChrisCann

Advantages: Beautifully sung and played. Gorgeous seasonal treasure
Disadvantages: Very heavily cut

...This is a glorious work and my Christmas listening is incomplete without it. The recording is first rate with wonderful soloists and fine playing. My only gripe is that it is very heavily cut, with probably about a third of the total running time missing. King Herod fares particularly badly, with only one verse of his show steeling helentenor aria included. The ballet music (very much in the style of the Bachanale from Saint Saens' 'Samson et Dalila') is also sadly missing. I sang first Shepherd and Zarathustra in the 2005 New London Opera Group production and realised just what a powerful piece it is. However, for all my gripes about cuts, this piece really needs to be more widely heard. If you don't have a lump in your throat when the third shepherd gives the baby Jesus his mittens, you have no soul!... Read review

A Classical Review
Review of Simply the Best Classical Anthems by berlioz

Advantages: A great diversity of famous works
Disadvantages: Not everything is perfect

...SAINT-SAËNS: Finale from Symphony no.3 in C minor, op.78 "Organ" This collection therefore represent some of the best known pieces of music from the Baroque era to the 20th Century, all predominately orchestral. Most of the recordings are very good, although there are a few rather poor ones as well. The slowing down in the "Ride of the Valkyries" takes much power away from the piece, Beethoven's Fifth is painfully slow and measured instead of being faster and more powerful, the "1812 Overture" lacks punch (with the cannons probably digitally added) and the "Ode to Joy" is nothing but a 30 second snippet. However the choral pieces are mostly fantastic (the Dies Irae from Verdi's Requiem is nothing short but mind-blowing, as is the Mozart alternative, Holst's "Mars" is one of the best I've heard, the performance of Placido Domingo in "Nessun... Review of The Most Famous Opera Arias by operalover2000

Advantages: All good strong performances with some absolutely glorious
Disadvantages: Some of the arias do not show the singers at their best

...Juliette, opera Ah! je veux vivre Composed by Charles Gounod Performed by Munich Radio Orchestra with Edita Gruberova Conducted by Gustav Kuhn > A beautiul voice for this music, maybe not so much character as Callas but so amazing technically Le nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro), opera, K. 492 Voi che sapete che cosa è amor Composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Performed by Munich Radio Orchestra with Lucia Popp Conducted by Leonard Slatkin > Lucia Popp is amazing here. Her voice is sweet and technically excellent. Along with good phrasing this is probably the best version I have heard anywhere.
