...The Music This is the first of two albums of Schubert’s Lieder composed for piano and voice. Schubert composed the music to the work of such classical poets including, Goethe, Collins and Shakespeare. Each Lied tells a story of its own. The lyrics are sung in German but a translation is included in the cover. I won't give a track by track listing of the CD as this is easily available but will mention some of my personal favourites. 1. Lieder: Die Forelle: The Trout (Schubert) A playful a cheerful tale of a trout's journey through a stream. Most people will know and love Schubert's piano quintet also entitled The Trout. 5. I've got a Police Record and I'm proud of it.
Review of Outlandos D'Amour - Police (The) by Salgirl

Advantages: Hear them before they were polished, professional smoothies.

...It's 1979, my clothes aren't lairy but it's a close run thing. I'm rushing to the record shop before it closes to buy the debut album of a new group called Police. The lead singer's a bit of alright, especially with his short blonde hair and army keks, and I think I'm falling in love again. I buy the record. It's fate. There's a track called "Be My Girl Sally". This is too much. I run all the way home and slap the LP on the turntable, drop the arm on MY track and settle back to wallow in self-indulgent delciousness. It kicks off with a good beat. "Will ya be my girl, will ya be my girl, will ya be my, be my, be my girl.." repeats twice, starts to fade out. Hmmm, I sniff, not quite what I had in mind. A broad northern accent is now emerging from the speakers, reciting a sort of poem (somewhat reminiscent of Five Penny Piece, a northern... Read review

A Bonney wee lassy!
Review of (The) Radiant Voice of Barbara Bonney by bubblegum_princess

Advantages: Bonney's gorgeous voice; intelligent singing; great selection of songs
Disadvantages: No translations included

...;Deh vieni non tardar’ from The Marriage of Figaro and ‘Ach ich fuhls’ from The Magic Flute are both sublime, full of lyricism and emotional vulnerability, making it easy to see why her Mozart roles have been so celebrated. The Donezetti ‘Chiedi all’aura lusingiera’ marks a move away from Bonney’s traditional Mozart roles, but the result is a stunning duet with the tenor Gosta Winbergh, which makes a fascinating contrast to the Mozart arias and shows Bonney’s versatility. But Bonney has always described herself as ‘a lieder singer who happens to do opera’ and this is reflected in her superb rendition of Schumann’s ‘Mondnacht’. Her lightness of tone ensures that her voice seems to float effortlessly above the gorgeous piano (played by Vladimir Ashkenazy) and she... Read review
