those made with the Soul Stirrers. When Cooke joined the group in 1950 at the age of 19, he'd already spent four years singing with the Highway QC's. The Soul Stirrers lead singer, RH Harris, who quit just before Cooke's arrival, had spent almost 25 years moulding the group into gospel stardom through an innovative use of two lead singers matched with utmost energy and sophistication. Cooke initially sang in a style similar to Harris's, but soon took off into his own unearthly realm, writing spine-tingling songs like "Nearer to Thee", "Mean Old World", and the brilliant "Touch the Hem of His Garment", then singing them in his soaring, inimitable style with perfect control of phrasing and enunciation. Here it was. The long anticipated second album after the world wide smash of their debut album, Hot Fuss. Released in the UK in October 2006 on the Lizard King label the critics were sharpening their knives in anticipation due to Brandon Flowers, the lead singer, describing the album as "one of the best albums in the past twenty years" and that it would be "the album that keeps rock & roll afloat." The amazing success of Hot Fuss, hype surrounding the second album release and claims of grandeur by Flowers made for a heady mix of both excitement and trepidation when Sam's Town was released.
