Running "Amuk"... all over the place
Review of Amuk - Monogono by  bagoproverbial

Advantages: Certainly a little different
Disadvantages: Bizarre and not for everyone by any means

...death metal with ragged, hoarse vocals in the same vein as early Entombed or Morbid Angel. It isn't bad exactly- not bad at all in fact- but my confusion is deepening. The publicity of which I'm aware brands Monogono as Portuguese jazzy rock with hip hop influenced lyrics and jazz keyboards. And yet so far I've heard a classical intro and some gritty death metal, making me wonder what is possibly to come next. Maybe some reggae? (although I hope not) "Remolding Steel" does have more of a prog-rock feel to it as the song goes on, with interesting guitar work, and ends with an echoed shout, adding to the feeling that this band are full of surprises. Track 3, "Atros do Nada" is a chaos of tangled guitar chords, more scream / shout vocals interspersed with quieter guitar interludes and clean vocals- in other words, it sounds like Mr Bungle... Death metal is alive and well!
Review of Doom - Job For A Cowboy by  joe-survey

Advantages: Everything about it.
Disadvantages: ????

...Doom is the first EP of Death metal outfit, Job for a Cowboy. When i first heard of them through Kerrang! and metal hammer magazines, the first thing i thought was that because of the name they would either be a) Something to do with country music or b)crap. When i read about them though i was intrigued. I asked around and got my hands on this E.P. What i heard blew me away. It was six (or seven if you have the 2006 re-release) tracks of amazing death metal. My main previous experience of death metal was cannibal corpse and this was totally different, yet great. Track one - Catharsis for the Buried - 0:55 This is a simple introduction. It starts with a beat and overlaps this with screams of torture. Sounds of manic laughter are also heard along with grunted and screamed cries of "Let me out", ending with one shout of "Let me out... Read review

Death Metal in a Viking Style - Without Fear
Review of Once Sent From The Golden Hall - Amon Amarth by  StavrosJohnson

Advantages: This album has Victorious March on! Very energetic.
Disadvantages: Slightly raw, less catchy than their future releases.

...Debut albums are funny things. In my opinion, they should be the best albums of an artists career - after all, the material on them is generally what has got them signed to a label, and is the result of years of toil and constant honing to make them better. Generally though, they're not even as good as future releases by the same artist, they lay down a framework for what can be expected in the future, and they show some tantalising glimpses of their talents, but there's something missing. Well, Amon Amarth are an exception to that rule, their first album 'Once Sent From the Golden Hall' being as good as the majority of their releases, better even than a couple of them. Amon Amarth's first album is a good, solid, traditional Death Metal album, comprising everything you'd expect in the genre, only doing it better than their peers... Read review
