'The Same Side' is the second album from Lucie Silvas. Her debut album 'Breathe In' was very successful in the UK and has gone platinum. For those of you who are not familiar with Lucie, she is a British Singer/Songwriter/Pianist. Before she started her own music career she was writing songs for the likes of S Club, Rachel Stevens, Liberty X and Gareth Gates, she was even a backing singer for Gary Barlow! Most recently she co-wrote the hit song 'Who Am I?' for Will Young. She is often compared to Delta Goodrem, although being a big fan of them both, they have different styles.
Having been a massive fan of Lucie since her debut single 'What You're Made Of' back in 2004, I was extremely excited about her follow up album 'The Same Side'. And I was not disappointed! The album was released abroad before the UK, so I imported it and was very very pleased with it.
Last Year - The first single to be taken from this album. A lovely soft mid tempo track with a catchy chorus, 'You don't give me the words I wanna hear, if you want me to stay baby make it clear, you're not showing me love, like you did last year'. I really like this song although I was surprised that it was picked to be the first single taken from the album. Unfortunately it didn't make much of an impact in the UK charts.
Sinking In - I love this song, it
is the second single to be taken from this album. It's extremely catchy, you will be singing it after just a few plays. If you loved 'Breathe In' then you will definitely love this! It's about trying to get someone's attention and wanting to let them know how you feel, 'I have been waiting been waiting, cos you know how I feel about you, this is a game that you're playing and I'm not gonna lose'. The accompanying video is also quite funny, worth watching!
The Same Side - Written about Lucie's sister (and fellow bandmate) Mia Silvas, this is a personal track with a gospel feel to it. Definitely one of the stand out tracks and has always been a favourite of mine, 'This is our time to fly and I don't wanna leave you behind, it should be you and I on the same side', lyrically this is one of Lucie's best songs.
Trying Not To Lose - Not the strongest song on the album, but all the same it is a lovely relaxing song. It's about feeling confused about what you have, 'If I could only wake up not feeling so connfused about what I have and what I'm trying not to lose'. It has quite an acoustic sound to it, so if you're a fan of acoustic music then you'll like this.
Something About You - My favourite song on the album! It is slightly rocky and quite different to any of Lucie's other songs. If you liked 'Twisting the chain' from the first album, then you'll love this! This song is about liking someone and not being able to tell them how you feel, 'I've been watching from a distance trying to hold back what I'm feeling, it doesn't matter that I've got so much to lose, there's something about you'. I'm very surprised this was never a single as it was clearly a favourite with the fans.
Place To Hide - A really sweet ballad with lovely lyrics, 'If you still find that you can't face the world outside, let me be your place to hide', it's a song written about friendship. This song was supposed to be the third single although for someone reason it never happened in the end which is probably just as well because even though it is a lovely song it's not very commercial and I don't think it would have been given much airplay.
Almost - Again, this is one of my faves on the album, it's fairly upbeat and quite different to anything else on the album, 'I don't wanna keep on running if I'm only gonna fall behind, oh we've almost got it right but almost wasn't what I had in mind'. This song would have made a great single too.
Right Here - Another mid tempo song with lovely lyrics, not one of my faves on the album, but I certainly wouldn't skip past it. Lucie wrote this about her Fiance, Geordan Murphy (Irish rugby player), 'You can call it luck, call it anything you want but we were meant to be right here, you're part of my life and that's all the faith I need'.
Counting - I really love the lyrics to this song, and I think anyone could relate to it at times 'Counting 1, 2, 3 and 4 I wont let all these silly things bug me no more'. It is beautifully written and it almost reminds me of a nursery rhyme. Again, this song has a very acoustic feel to it.
Already Gone - Probably my fave ballad on the album, it definitely stands out...Lucie's voice really shines on this track and you definitely tell that her voice has got stronger over the past couple of years, 'I can't stop the moon from rising, the sun will set exactly where it should, I can't stop the rivers from running, god only knows I'd stop if I could', another song which shows off Lucie's writing abilities.
Alone - Another slightly rockier song, again you will like this if you like Lucie's more upbeat songs. The song is about still wanting to be with someone but at the same time just wanting to have some time alone for a while, 'You're the ocean, I'm an Island, we're together but I'm still alone'.
Passionate You - My other favourite on this album! I just love the chorus. It's such a sweet song and rounds off the album nicely. Again, this is another song with great lyrics, 'I saw the briefest slip, a flash of anger with a single teardrop to explain, how your pain don't hide so easily'.
Stolen - This is the hidden track. It's a lovely ballad; just Lucie and the piano...doing what she does best, 'How did you steal my heart from me? I thought it was safe that I'd hidden the key'.
I can't find any faults with this album, every song is special in it's own way. The only thing that annoys me is that the hidden track 'Stolen' is attached to the end of the previous song so you can't listen to it by itself unless you split the two.
I really recommend this album, not just to people who have Lucie's debut album but to anyone who enjoys decent pop music. From listening to the tracks on this album you can see how Lucie's voice has changed and how she has moved on from her earlier stuff. Lucie is by far one of the best female singers in the UK, it is a shame that she is so under-rated probably due to the fact that this album was very poorly marketed compared to her debut album.

From what you've said I'd really like this. I keep getting her albums recommended to me on Amazon because of other albums I've bought. I've never actually heard her before but I'd like to!
