About Each Track

To The Moon And Back
"I would fly to the moon and back
If you'll be, if you'll be my baby..."
This track is about a woman who feels unloved and uncared for so she keeps away from human affection.
The track's theme is a futuristic hyperbole but it is a very romantic song. I like the intro that has a robotic sound effect which is followed by a terrific guitar play accompanied by drums. It has a dramatic futuristic feel but retains the feel of romance. The lines in the chorus may seem to be exaggerated but the supporting lyrics make the song sugary-sweet.

Carry On Dancing
"You're never safe 'till you see the dawn
And if the clock strikes..."
I like how Hayes shows off his falsetto vocals on this song.. He really did great. I don't find this to be an amazing track but it is good with a nice dance beat. It has a catchy chorus though it is not as great as the other tracks.

Tears Of Pearls
"All these mixed emotions
We keep locked away
Like stolen pearls"
This song has excellent lyrics. I think this is one of the best songs in the album. I admire how the key changes just at the right moment; Perfect timing of instruments. This song is good to shake with on the dance floor and proves to be an excellent song for Hayes.

I Want You
"Ooh I want you
I don't know if I need you but
Ooh I'd die to find out..."
I consider this song to be different from the other tracks. This one has a very fast vocal delivery that I would always be lost each time I try to sing along with it. It seems to have a vein-breaking speed and is famous with its "chika-cherry cola" line. The intro is good with its powerful drum rendition. Hayes only sings a little bit slower in the chorus part, but not that slow. Aside from the chorus, the lines are sung in full speed that makes me wonder if Hayes took a breath between each line. This is a great song.

Truly Madly Deeply
"I wanna stand with you on a mountain,
I wanna bathe with you in the sea.
I wanna lay like this forever,"
This is undeniably a very romantic song. Hayes hits the microphone again with his literally 'almost breathless' rendition in about 7 seconds in each of the starting 5 lines but it sounds really good. The Chorus part is so lovely and romantic.

About 9 years ago, this song was played in 4 wedding ceremonies that I attended when couples marched towards the church's door when the wedding rite was over. The lines "I'll be your hope, I'll be your dream, I'll be your fantasy" don't sound right to my ear as they sound a bit conceited. Those would be the words of a man whom I'd like to kick out from my door. The lines would be better if sung the other way such as "You'll be my hope, you'll be my dreams, you'll be my fantasy." Well, I am not a song writer so I don't complain much. Seriously, it is a good song with excellent melody.

Violet
"Let your body move into the doorway
To the disco inside you head (Violet)..."
This track has a dance vibe. It's a bit funky but sensuously delivered by Hayes. It seems to me that he lacked the enthusiasm upon recording this song, or maybe the lack of energy was intently done. Bass is dominantly noticeable in this track. I can't give this a full-star rating but I think Hayes shows a decent effort on this.

All around Me
"Like cold chardonnay chilled for a day
You're smooth and crisp and on display..."
This one has great intro with good combination of bass, guitar and drums. This has a fast beat and is good in the dance floor. I hear some lines in rap which is not an identity of Savage Garden but it's good to hear something different from the band.

Universe
"Cuddle up close, Lay on my chest now
Listen our heart beats coming down"
Savage Garden made a very sexy ballad out of this song. I may have been overstating it, but I think this song has a 'grinding' melody' that suits to be a background song for 'pole dancing'. This can also be great as honeymoon song. The lyrics are also so sensual and very sweet. Hayes excellently delivers this song. I love this one.

A Thousand Words
"You can resurrect a thousand words to deceive me more and more.
A thousand words will give the reason why I don't need you anymore..."
This track has a dramatic intro and a great display of guitar talent. This is one of underestimated songs from Savage Garden which I personally think deserves better. Hayes' change of mood in singing is noticeable in this song. He goes enthusiastic and switches to whispering in a few lines. This track has good harmony and beat.

Break Me, Shake Me
"So break me shake me hate me take me over
When the madness stops then you will be alone..."
This track has a good use of bass. Hayes goes sexy and energetic with this one. This has a pop-rock combination and is excellently delivered by Hayes. I love the melody of this song.

Mine
"Can't you see I'm standing naked.
I'll bear all the crosses and the crucifixes you can provide."
This song created religious controversy in the U.S. and was eventually removed from the U.S.-released version of the album due to the lines 'crosses and crucifixes".
It has good intro. The one that I'd be wondering what's this song is about and the kind that I'd be dying to hear the first few lines of the song if I happened to hear it the first time. But when the lyrics are being sung, this starts to bore me a little bit with its somewhat creepy melody. This is a nice effort by Savage Garden though I never liked this song much.

Monica (Album Version)
"But on the telephone line I am anyone,
I am anything I want to be..."
This track has very good piano rendition. However, when I listen to this song, my ears tell me something's not right with this song. The melodies just don't match much. Hayes shows exceptional talent in this song though with his falsetto vocals.

Santa Monica (Studio Version)
Putting two same songs in an album with different versions is perfectly alright as long as it is the greatest song in the album. But I don't think 'Santa Monica' is Savage Garden's greatest hit. These two same songs must not be placed in direct sequence. I don't find it nice to hear two same songs in a row. This is a good song anyway, just not excellent. I prefer to hear the album version as it has been recorded with higher sound quality than the studio version.
A Little About Savage Garden And The Album

Savage Garden album is a debut album of Savage Garden duo which contains 13 tracks that have different styles of music. This album reached #1 in Australian charts and remained at the top for 17 weeks. This album also did hit the top of the charts worldwide. In 2005, this album was certified 12 times platinum in Australia, 7 times in U.S. and double platinum in UK.

This album was released in Australia in March 1997, in U.S. in April 1997 and a little later in the rest of the world. The song 'Mine' was eventually removed from the U.S.-released version due to religious controversy.

Savage Garden is topped by Australian talents Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones which was formed in 1993. The duo officially had their split in October 2001 due to Daren Hayes' desire to become a solo performer.

More of My Experience and Opinion

It was in the late 1990's when Savage Garden became so popular. I could hear the band's songs almost everywhere that I got tired of those songs though I admit they are great songs. I guess FM stations played one Savage Garden's song in every playlist of 10 songs. There was even a time when I got tired of listening to the duo's song in a radio station that I rushed to change the channel to another radio station and I heard Savage Garden again. I felt so sick to hear Savage Garden played simultaneously in 4 radio stations. When I proceeded to my friend's wedding, a Savage Garden's song was played. I thought I had enough.

Even sing-along bars had to catch up with Savage Garden phenomenon and had to upgrade their music collection to include Savage Garden songs in their list. The most obvious thing for me though was that women were the ones who mostly sang their songs due to the high notes, especially the falsetto. Most men have standard masculine tone and couldn't bear to sing Darren Hayes' vein-breaking songs.

At the mid-part of 2006, I couldn't hear much of Savage Garden in radio stations and I realized I missed the duo's beautiful songs. I decided to buy this 'Savage Garden' album because I wanted to listen to Darren Hayes' angelic voice again and Daniel Jones' guitar and keyboard expertise. Then I realized that Savage Garden really made great songs and they have exceptional talents which explains why they are adored by many.
Recommendation

If you would like a more comprehensive album of Savage Garden, you can get the Affirmation or Truly Madly Completely album as they contain more songs and they were released later than this Savage Garden debut album . However, if you are the "nostalgic' type or a Savage Garden-album collector, I recommend you grab a copy of this album. This is the phenomenal album that made the Savage Garden duo become phenomenal stars.

Excellent.....though some don't like it, I'm all for track-by-track reviews as to me they shows you're really serious about and properly feeling the music.

Savage Garden - Savage Garden - review by Desolate_Cash

Advantages: A dream among musicians. The self titled album “Savage Garden” is one that defines the band. With songs such as Truly Madly Deeply and I want you, how could it not be a hit. A bumpy ride with some inadvertent depictions of love.
Disadvantages: A pure and unrecognised talent shown within this album is pitiful. I pity anyone that has not had the chance to enjoy such wondrous music. The disadvantages are that the band have little or no recognition in the UK.
