Turbonegro hail from Oslo and are simply the best band that you probably never have heard of. In the 90's they released the best punk album of the decade (Ass Cobra), followed by the best rock album of the decade (Apocalypse Dudes). On top of producing the two finest albums of the decade the also had the best image that any band has had since the Ramones, that was Demim, Mascara, Homosexuality and Facist imagery*. All of these combined with some of the greatest rock and roll imaginable meant that live they are a true vision of brillance.
Then in 97 it all went tits up and the band split due to what was described at the time as an impending religious crisis. At the time of the split the bands popularity was at an all time high and rather than subside as was expected the momentum kept going a Tribute album (Alpha Mother F***ers) was released featuring Queens of The Stone Age, Supersuckers, Therapy and Nashville Pussy. This meant that the momentum behind their popularity increased. In 2001 they reformed and started playing various European festivals, this was shortly followed by a 3 album deal with Burning Heart Records / Epitaph.
This Scandinavian Leather is the first album to be released under that new deal and what a corker of an album it is. It starts off with Blizzard of Flames a easy listening intro and then straight into the first track "Wipe it Till it Bleeds" which has a relentless repetitive guitar riff which lifts you up and you just know that this is what Rock and Roll is all about.
The album is a superb mixture of Punk Rock with tracks like "Train Of Flesh" and "Le Saboteur" which take the Ramones Sound to another level. "Sell Your Body to The Night" which has an incredibly sleazy stoogiesesque riff. The nihilistic lyrical sentiment of "Drenched in Blood", "Ride with Us" and "Turbonegro Must Be Destroyed", but this is more than just a punk rock album. There are shades of classic rock and you can hear more standard rock influences such as Alice Cooper on "F*** The World".
Where this album really succeeds is that they have taken a whole heap of influences from the last 30 years of rock and roll and put them into a new place just in time for the new century. The whole album is superbly produced producing a dramatic and pompous sound. Lead Guitarist, Euroboys’ solos are sublime and this backed up with one of the tightest rhythm sections in any rock band going around today, truly shows that as far as rock and roll is concerned no other band really matters.
I truly think that for any fan of any form of rock music this album is an essential purchase. Turbonegro have made Rock and Roll a matter of life and death again.
It was released in numerous formats ordinary CD (£12), CD + DVD in leather case (£18), double vinyl album in leather box with tons of extra stuff (52 Euro). If you can get the DVD then it is well worth the extra you get a documentary covering several preformances from the Reserrection tour and footage of the band in the studio rehearsing and recording the new album, it only lasts 34 minutes but is still well worth the extra, in that some thought has gone into actually prepairing the DVD rather than sticking on a few promos and interviews.
Don't take my word for it visit http://www.scandinavianleather.com and download a couple of the files, then visit http://www.turbonegro.com and become one of the Turbojugend.
*Note:- their singer Hank Von Helvete is on a far right groups death list for some less than complimentary things he said about them on Norweegan radio.
