Advantages: Sublime, soulful songs by Schubert
Disadvantages: Sung in German

...The Music This is the first of two albums of Schubert’s Lieder composed for piano and voice. Schubert composed the music to the work of such classical poets including, Goethe, Collins and Shakespeare. Each Lied tells a story of its own. The lyrics are sung in German but a translation is included in the cover. I won't give a track by track listing of the CD as this is easily available but will mention some of my personal favourites. 1. Lieder: Die Forelle: The Trout (Schubert) A playful a cheerful tale of a trout's journey through a stream. Most people will know and love Schubert's piano quintet also entitled The Trout. 5. Lieder: Heidenröslein: Wild Rose (Goethe) A serious ode to the beauty of the wild rose. 6. Review of Schubert: String Quintet and Trio by  Freespirit

Advantages: Haunting, passionate music to get lost in.
Disadvantages: It's classical and this puts people off before they even try it.

...recalls the adagio and must have provoked a few tears itself over the years. I can only quote the notes which describes it as “tortured innocence painfully suggests the composer’s increasing awareness of his own mortality (he died just over two weeks after completing the quintet).” Woken by the raucous scherzo the heart begins to pound. Allegretto [9’41] Schubert finally worked though the anger and frustration and the fourth movement has a more relaxed happy feel. The dance music reminiscent of gypsy violins plays quite cheerfully and by the end of the quintet one feels truly satisfied in some way and ready for anything in spite of the strange ending. String Trio Movement in B Flat Major, D471 [11’50] This short piece by Schubert, placed first on the cd, is much lighter and brighter than the quintet. The Raphael Ensemble The notes explain... Eight plus Seven = fascinating chamber music
Review of Melos Ensemble in Septets and Octets by  Maestrolover

Advantages: Great music, fantastic value for money and fine performance
Disadvantages: Onepiece with slightly overbearing clarinettist...?

...to another piece on these CDs the 1st violin part was played by Ignaz Schuppanzigh, who'd played 1st violin in the premiere of Beethoven's Septet 24 years earlier. Perhaps because of the darker and more dramatic nature of this work, it didn't become popular immediately and had to wait 3 years for another performance and was not published until 1853. This piece is a completely different kettle of fish to the others on these 2 CDs, it has a much stronger and darker dramatic impulse behind much of the music, Schubert changes the mood of the music almost instantaneously from sunny to ominously stormy. As my conducting professor (himself a Schubert expert) succinctly and cheerily said "Schubert's music often has the smell of death around it..." and that's very true here.
