Advantages: Contrasting: dramatic and relaxing, darkness to light Disadvantages: Frustrating if you live in a city
. They were both performed for the first time in 1808 for Beethoven's benefit concert in Vienna.
Symphony no 5 in C minor
1st Movement: Allegro con brio
2nd Movement: Andante con moto
3rd Movement: Allegro
4th Movement: Allegro
The period when these symphonies were composed is known as Beethoven's heroic period. The fifth sympony is probably the most characteristic of this phase: Darkness defeated by light. It opens with a dramatic four-note motif that is repeated threatenly through the first movement. (The motif was used by the allies during WW2 as a Victory symbol)
The second movement is slower and more lyrical. The tempo of the short third movement speeds up to lead into the triumphal finale.
Symphony no 6 in F major
1st Movement: Allegro ma non troppo
Awakening of cheefulfeelings upon arrival in the country
2nd Movement ...
Advantages: Great passion, beautiful melodies, unrestrained romanticism Disadvantages: The finale doesn't quite convince in it's purpose
The symphony opens with a slow introduction on clarinet and low strings (this is the Fate theme, which is easy to remember). It is almost funereal in tone, somber and clouded. It is first carried forward by bassoon and clarinet, with a gracefully lilting dance-like air, although the underlying rhythm makes it sound heavy. A more bright strain completes the subject, which is then used to build an insistent climax. Without a break Tchaikovsky leads us into an anguished second subject in F sharp on the strings. From here we are launched ...
Advantages: Dead easy to drop the top (and put it up again) Disadvantages: Fuel economy coulld be better
For the Summer I purchased a second hand MX5 1.8 Sports. It was 4 years old and had the matching hard top as well as the permanently fitted cloth soft top. I had done my home work and this was the one that every review was recommending. It is one of the limited edition Sports and as such comes with leather heated seats.
First things first, off came the hard top and into storage until winter. The hard top was very simple to remove and the soft top just flips up and down. However neither my wife or I can pull the soft top up when sitting in the seats. One of us has to get out. Both the hard top and soft top have a heated rear window which is essential and in a two seater cabin. The fold up rear wind deflector is not that good so long hair still gets blown forward. Top Gear did an effective demonstration of the difference ...
