A return to form Review ofScience And Nature [ECD] - Bluetones (The)by
yhwman
Advantages: The tones are back on form Disadvantages: But it's not quite as good as the debut
Phew, the ‘tones had me worried after the disappointing Return to the Last Chance Saloon, but this is a definite return to form. Prior to writing this album the band increased in size by adding a keyboard player and it added a new dimension to the music. Opening track Zorrro, with it’s Mexican elements, sounds like it could have come off Return, but happily it’s also a good song. As are all the songs on the album, Autophillia verges on psychedelia ...

Advantages: 11 fantastic songs Disadvantages: Too short, cover art a bit naff
...tour before the release of Science and Nature I couldn't wait to get my hands on the album. I certainly wasn't disappointed. There is a musically maturity here more present than on the 2 previous albums, with the lads trying something a bit different on tracks such as Basement Song, and the superb instrumental Blood Bubble. But it's song like Last of the Great Navigators and Emily's Pine that really set this ahead from the rest of the competition. ...

Terrrific! Review ofScience And Nature [ECD] - Bluetones (The)by

Advantages: Disadvantages:
...in leaps and bounds, as Science and Nature shows how eclectic the lads can be.
The two singles, "Autophilia" and "Keep The Home Fires Burning", give a hint to the sort of catchiness and quality behind the originality to their songs. Other main highlights include the rabble-rousing "Mudslide", the chaotic "Zorrro" and the dreamy "Tiger Lily". Markl Morriss and the boys have shown the progression that all great bands make after their first two albums, ...

Advantages: worth a listen, still a good band Disadvantages: a more pop, uninspired direction
I have to say that i was a bit dissapointed by 'The Bluetones' fairly uninspirational releases in the way of 'keep the home fires burning' and 'autophilia'. However, i decided to go out and buy this on the basis on their two albums which came beforehand. I must say that i was a little disappointed by the bands attempt to appeal to a more pop based audience, which i think ultimately results in the bands downfall to produce as good an album as before. ... ...those who liked their singles will enjoy this album greater than i did.
For those who share my feelings regarding the singles will be pleased to find that a few songs are in there whih seem to hint at the greatness which came before. 'Mudslide' and 'The Basement Song' are my favourites here, and there are also a few others which are a good listen. The all instrumental 'Blood Bubble' also shows how the band are still willing to do some things a little ...

Five speed gear box Review ofScience And Nature [ECD] - Bluetones (The)by
Lazy_shadow
Advantages: Probably their best work Disadvantages: some songs are a bit long
The Bluetones first album was excelletn, their secon was good and this at the very least matches their first album. It was critically aclaimed but didn't really get that much commercial succsess, it should have done though as this is a very good album.
It is best played whilst driving on a hot summers day as it has that sort of feel to it, one of the tracks "Slack Jaw" (which has an ocordian in) was actually recorded outside. The opener "Zorro" ... ..."Last of the great Navigators" is very warming. The excellent single and perhaps slightly risky when played at Glastonbury "Mudslide" is here. The lead single "Home Fires" is as good as "Slight return" and the slightly strange "Autophillia" sounds like nothing else that has ever been done.
The Paranoid "Basement Song" is probably the best track and "Emmilys Pine" is a great way to close the album. If you are a fan of the band you will definetly ...
