band are jumping to conclusions. Yes, there's a certain cabaret aspect to what they do, but that's not to dismiss them as frivolous nightclub entertainment. That's only half the story. "Comfortably Numb" may have nodded to gay disco but this eclectic bunch of fashionistas have more interesting reference points tucked up their puff sleeves. If anything, the prevailing mood here is sunny AM rock, the kind of thing you might have tuned into in 70s New Jersey. "Take Your Mamma Out", perhaps the first song about coming out to your mother in a gay club, and sung by Jake Shears like primetime Elton, is a cracker. So too "Tits on the Radio"--slick barroom boogie that takes a venomous swipe at New York's increasing conservatism. Best here, though, is the anthemic "It Can't Come Quickly Enough", a retro carve-up of Nick Kershaw and the Pet Shop Boys that's more powerful than it sounds. Ignore it at your peril. --Paul Tierney

case study in albums that are more than the sum of their parts. On paper, the group's combination of 1970s glam, disco, and pop brings to mind Elton John, Supertramp, and a really sweaty night at the disco with a particularly deft DJ on the turntables. In practice, however, the band uses their influences not so much to create a new style as to render up something eerily familiar that isn't quite identifiable. And while the sense of the familiar makes them immediately appealing, it is the unidentified other that keeps you listening.A trio of dance-floor stompers opens the album, all thunderous bass lines, falsetto vocals, and wah-wah guitar straight out of SUPERFLY, but that's only the beginning. Tits on the Radio, is a snarling, swaggering attack on conservatism, recorded before the Janet Jackson/Superbowl debacle, but more relevant since that time. Better Luck highlights a gloriously thumping honky-tonk beat. And the closing tracks, both of which use sweeping ambient electronics, end the album on that majestic crash everyone experiences once they leave the heightened reality of a nightclub and return to the drab city streets.[Reviews]NME (31/01/04, p.47) - 9 (out of 10) - ...the anti-conformist of the yearn

...in these Isles as The Scissor Sisters, a high-camp act with flamboyance and flair flailing from their fingertips. They make dance-pop, disco and electro music which retains a strong dancehall vibe that enables it to be a hit on both sides of the BBC radio networks. Radio 2 broke the band, but Radio 1 also play their music. Heck, you can hear them on Doctor Who, for Whedon's sake! (albeit on the completely sucky season finale, but still). They're ... ...on their first album, the Scissor Sisters have compiled a collection of 13 of the most addictive disco music tracks heard since the heyday of the Bee Gees and Elton John. Already you should be able to tell if you love or hate this record.
Pink Floyd fans have a further reason to start spitting with disgust and running off in the opposite direction with a paper bag over their head whilst shouting "NOOOOO", in that the Sisters have covered prog classic ...

...asked “Do you have the Scissor Sisters back in Holland?”
But it turns out they do. She was just ignorant.

So – the Scissor Sisters. Part of me thinks, “Why am I writing this?”. At this stage, everyone knows everything about them. They’ve taken the UK by storm, and the album reached the prestigious Number 1 spot earlier this summer (at the time of writing, they are still somewhere in the Top 10)
Now, I’m going ... ...“Who are Scissor Sisters?”

In the unlikely event that you actually HAVE been in a cave on Mars on mars, with your eyes closed and ears shut, you may actually NOT have heard of them. In which case, you’re probably not actually reading this or genuinely don’t care, but someone will probably string me up if I don’t leave some useful information about them.
Scissor Sisters aren’t actually a bunch of related female cutting devices. However, ...

...idea why I like the Scissor Sisters. I just do. There’s no rational explanation for my feeling this way, it just happened. Generally, it’s not often I find myself in agreement with the music press. Generally in the last few years, I’ve found disliking bands that music magazines have heaped praise upon. I’ve never been entirely sure whether it’s me that’s out of touch, or them. I have frequently, if sporadically, enjoyed the Scissor Sisters, though. ... ...the staff. “It’s the Scissor Sisters, I think”, she replied, before going off to check and coming back to confirm that her first guess was the right one. The album turned out to be on their 2 for £20 offer, and as I already had one from that offer in my hand, I figured it couldn’t hurt to take a chance.
I was soon to discover that others wouldn’t share my unrestrained joy at the album. On hearing it playing on my stereo, my flatmate asked “Is that ...

Advantages: Brilliant songs, a near perfect debut album Disadvantages: In danger of being over-exposed?
...so let's run with it). Scissor Sisters (the name coming from a euphemism for a sexual act for lesbians) consist of Jake Shears (vocals), Ana Matronic (vocals), Babydaddy (guitars/keyboards), Del Marquis (guitar) and Paddy Boom (drums). And they look an exciting, if a little odd, prospect, reinforced by their delectable names.
Scissor Sisters have combined classic pop, disco, new wave, old fashioned rock 'n' roll, ballads and glam rock footstompers ... ...hallmark of a classic album. Scissor Sisters manage to encapsulate just about every musical style, taste and niche that one wonders what must be going through their minds… a hive of creativity, one imagines.
The album opens with the instantly recognisable piano of 'Laura', one of the most memorable singles of 2004. I was in the US for the first six months of 2004, so missed out on the moment when Scissor Sisters first broke through, and remember ...
