Almost a year ago, I was on holiday in Crete during the September weekend. To alleviate the general everyday boredom, I would go to the shop nearest our hotel every afternoon and come back laden down with yesterdays newspapers, to read basking in the sun. Half way through the week, though, I passed a magazine rack and the cover of a German magazine caught my eye. Oh the front was a picture of a... person? Is it a boy, or is it a girl? The writing on the cover read "Tokio Hotel versexen die Fans"... My German's far from fluent but it was enough for me to get the gist. Afraid of forgetting the name of the band, I bought the magazine and brought it back to the UK with me (I still have it, determined to learn enough German to read it all one day). Upon my return I went to YouTube and had my first Tokio Hotel experience (That's what it is, an experience) with their second single, Schrei. As I got more and more into Tokio Hotel, rumours began to circulate. A third album?
In English? It definitely made sense - their first two albums had helped them conquer not only Germany, Austria and Switzerland, but they were becoming ever more popular in Poland, the Czech Republic, Russia, and even France. Why not push for world domination through the Lingua Franca of the modern world? Sure enough these rumours were soon confirmed and Scream was released. It contains no original songs - every track is a translation of one of the songs from their first two albums. But this is far from a bad thing - it has aided the understanding of thousands - what must, surely, by now be millions - of fans across the world.
Scream - translated from Schrei, arguably their most successful single in the German-speaking world. Will it have the same success here? With it's painfully pop-punk sound, I have no reason to suspect otherwise. Good to hear that the Nein Nein Nein had been kept intact too :)
Ready Set Go - translated from the German "Uebers Ende Der Welt" (Beyond the end of the world). Catchy, rhythmic - this song has everything in it, and it could - hopefully will - launch the boys to UK fame upon it's release (today, btw).
Monsoon - from the German, Durch den Monsun. It was the boys first single in Germany and wasn't a breakthrough for them. Despite this, the much more mellow sound offers a welcome relaxation to the ears for a few minutes. I personally love the lyrics to this song too.
Love is Dead - (from Totgeliebt, "loved to death"). Such an emo title! And the song could definitely be marketed as such - Bill's lovely voice half singing, half screaming over great guitar riffs (or whatever the word is. I've never studied music). Although I don't like it as much as the original (I know, that makes no sense), it's still a really good song and could do well, particularly amongst the early-teenage girl market. Which really is what makes up most of Tokio Hotel's fanbase.
Don't Jump - from Spring Nicht (which a friend of mine was convinced should be translated as Spring Night). Like Monsoon, this is much slower than some of the songs on the album. This is where Bill's voice comes into it's own.
On the Edge (From Stich ins Glueck) - A good song, despite the somewhat depressing lyrics. It tells the story of a girl who self-harms for the "rush" it gives her, and eventually ends up killing herself
Sacred - Translation of Heilig. A very slow song, with a really catchy chorus.
Break Away (Ich Brech Aus) - Probably the fastest, most up-beat song on the album. Personally not my favourite but nonetheless a really good song.
Rescue Me (Rette Mich) - Rette Mich was never my favourite TH song but the translation has turned out OK. I think his voice sounds quite strained at some points, but the music is still good
Final Day (Der Letzte Tag) - I never liked the German version of this song, but I think being able to understand the lyrics added another dimension to the song. It's one of my favourites on the album.
Forgotten Children (Vergessene Kinder) - Such a sad song, about abandoned children. It's written about specific children that the bad have met in their lives.
By Your Side (An deinder Seite) - a lovely slow romantic song. It's lovely :)
