quantum, inspired leap with the Andy Weatherall and Terry Farley-producedScreamadelica, which melds the trippy, blissed-out ethos of acid rock with its more rhythm and sample oriented late Eighties counterpart, acid house.Screamadelicais a meeting of supposedly hostile genres, like American and Russian astronauts docking together in orbit--a musical marriage made in space. All of the elements onScreamadelica--piano, samples, gospel singers, dub-drenched rhythms--float about weightlessly amidst one another, as if beyond gravity's pull. And gliding above it all is Gillespie himself, at best on "Higher Than The Sun", vocals at once ecstatic and wistful, staring down at a world that's yet to catch up with where he's at. In time,Screamadelicawould come to be regarded as one of the defining albums of its era. --David Stubbs

Primal Scream are the ultimate fantasy rock band. They couldn't be more perfect had they been created in a factory.Through their career they've embraced techno,Rolling Stones esque blues, acid house,rock-abilly,indie and electro. They are the rock band that make you want to dance. The white indie band that don't seem out of place in a club. This is their third album and marks a massive departure from the first two records. After leaving the Jesus and The Mary Chain, Bobby Gillespie formed Primal Scream with the aim of making classic rock with a twist. The first two records 'Primal Scream' and 'Sonic Flower Groove' were standard rock affairs and totallyout of place in the early 1990's, when dance was the ruling musical genre and ecstacy its driving force.
So Primal Scream, rather than react against this movement, embraced dance music and the growing rave scene. They married classic rock to acid house and produced a Mercury Music Prize winning album that is truly remarkable. They brought in dance producer Andrew Weatherall, but also Rolling Stones producer Jimmy Miller.
The resulting record is remarkable. It's one of the only records I can play in the morning after a night out, love to hear in a club, listen to on a sunny afternoon and listen to so I feel better. It's easy to write depressing music, give me a guitar and I'll bang you out some three chord teenage angst. It's much harder to write uplifting music that doesn't feel cheesy, but is genuine and heartfelt.
The record begins with 'Movin' on up' which has a gospel vibe and is a truly magnificent.A hedonistic call to arms, it is one of the more guitar based tracks on the album and is a defiant call to arms.'Slip inside this house' is a house version of the original 13th Floor Elevators song.Whispered vocals and murky effects make this a sultry and sexy disco number.'Don't fight it feel it' has Denise Johnson on vocals rather than Bobby Gillespie, but is still a perfect house anthem. The production is simply stunning.
'Higher than the sun' comes in two parts on the record, both of which are sublime come down songs, described by the band as a 'Dub symphony'.It's much more than that,it's one of the defining musical moments of the 1990's.'Inner Flight' isn't the best track on the album but is still effective. On any other dance record it would be a standout track.'Come together' is lengthy but essential.Again there is a gospel meets dance kind of vibe that makes it a perfect club anthem.'Loaded' is the highlight of the album. It has a spoken word sample that declares the need to have a party. It's a perfect marriage of acid house and 1970's rock music.Slinky and sultry but with a solid rock heart.
'Damaged' is the quietest track here and is reminiscient of the Rolling Stones classic 'Angie'.Tender and serene, it is the perfect song for the morning after the night before.'I'm Coming down' is similarly tender biut with some Eastern string effects that are really soothing.Truly a great perfect come down record.'Shine like Stars' closes the album and is twee and sweet, but is still an essential song, with some lucsciuos effects.
I can't recommend this album enough. It's a dance record that rock fans love and a rock record that gets played in clubs.'Screamadelica' is an awesome flex of the musical muscle from a band that have never been afraid of experimentation.I've seen it on the highstreet for £5 so there is no excuse not to have this joyful and uplifting album in your life.
(I've also reviewed the Primal Scream best of compilation 'Dirty Hits' for those that want to get into the band.)
Advantages: More than just a collection of songs, a perfect album Disadvantages: None at all
"Screamadelica" contains a wide range of styles, almost as though Bobby Gillespie was showing off his influences and the highlights of his record collection, and yet it doesn't sound bitty. In fact, it's probably one of the most complete albums I've ever heard - in the same way that the Beach Boys is a complete album. Some of the album reminds me of the Rolling Stones, although not in the same way as the out-and-out imitation of later albums. First ... ...Stones, from the era of Sympathy for the Devil. There's also a Beach Boys influence (the instrumental "Inner Flight", and "I'm coming down" are songs that conjure up images of retired surfers and a peaceful boardwalk and fairground…)
"Slip inside this house" is a cover of a song by the Thirteenth Floor Elevators, a 60s US band who claimed to be the first psychedelic band - now I've been a huge Elevators fan since well before the 90s and Primal Scream ...

Winner of the first ever Mercury award way back in 1992, worthy of a place in my top 10 albums of all-time and possibly a contender for most stoned album of all time. Yes, you guessed it (well actually you already knew seeing as you clicked on it), it's Primal Scream's Screamadelica. Let's get straight on in with the bouncy first track...

"I'm movin' on up now, yeah and out of the darkness

There is also some great guitar in places, and it makes you wonder why you don't hear more of it on the album. During the chorus and other points in the song there is a female choir adding a soul element to the song.

...than Primal Scream's flagship album. Screamadelica is every one of these and more. They are one of those classic early 90s dance outfits that will never be forgotten. Their music stands the test of time, appreciated by millions.
It is possibly their use of live instruments alongside synthesised beats and pieces that distinguishes them from the contemporary cufuffle of today's wasted airtime. Be it the mixing of Jimmy Miller or the production magic ... ...vain as Underworld's Darren Price), Screamadelica is a modern masterpiece. Even the Orb show a little input helping to produce the majestic 'Higher than the sun'.
The album throws the listener around on a journey of lyrical exquisiteness backed by catchy drumbeats, guitar chords and synthesised mellowness. Each track takes you on a ride that you end up wishing never ends. Tracks such as 'Movin' on up' and 'Don't fight it, feel it'- jump straight ...

Advantages: A truly great album Disadvantages: none
A flawless masterpiece of an album that can be explained in two words- Paul Oakenfold. This magical producer managed to transform greasy, lanky-haired beanpole Bobby Gillespie- previously only known for his 3rd rate jangly guitar nonsense- into a maverick musical messiah responsible for one of the most brilliantly diverse albums of the decade. The track Loaded is a prime example; it started out as a stodgy, guitar-laden number called 'I'm Losing ... ...and cranking up the beat, it metamorphosised into a anti-establishment dance classic. Rebellion has never sounded so good.
The true beauty of the album lies in its diversity- from the gospel choir and handclaps of 'Movin' On Up' to the euphoric beat of 'Don't Fight It Feel It', from the funky, feelgood 'Come Together' to the solitary, soothing sax of 'I'm Coming Down'. My personal favourite is the two-part dub symphony of 'Higher Than The Sun', ...

...lyrics and preaching backing singers, Screamadelica takes you through a journey of uplifting and trance-like tunes. Its like visiting a night club on the best night out of your life, with Gospel singers reminding you every now and then about what a good time your having, leaving you content and smiling when the last turn of the disc has completed! Starting with the soulful 'Moving On Up' you have been immediately put on a feel-good factor for the ... ...dub tunes of 'Slip Inside This House', 'Loaded' and 'Come Together' and to ultimately end with the dreamy 'Higher Than The Sun'. I think at this point you are going to get no further, it's time to get your taxi home! Never has a piece of music fused the Dance Scene, Soul, Gospel and good old Rock 'n' Roll to such a cohesive effect and it may probably never happen again. It is a piece of history, perfectly capturing the house scene of the early 90's. ...

Advantages: The Three Opening TRacks Disadvantages: The Arrangement of the three opening tracks as the first three
How in Hell do you follow up an album like Screamadelica? Well one way is to draw on your influences and do something completely different! PrimalScream went to the deep Alabama woods to record this one and it shows! Its a good old Rock 'n' Roll album with Hill-Billy screams and shouts but with hints of some Soul music reminiscent of some of the tunes from 'Screamadelica', but which are far more subtle in their outlay, as they are not well-honed dance tunes. The feel-good going out on the town feel remains in the opening tune 'Rocks' and the upbeat tempo remains with the next tune 'Jailbird'. The feeling then changes with the soul-ballad '(I'm Gonna) Cry Myself Blind'. These are probably the three strongest songs on the album and I personally would have spaced them out as on your first listen you tend to be disappointed with the rest ...
Advantages: collects their classic singles on one record Disadvantages: weak tracks from the latest album
Firstly this isn't technically a greatist hits set if you are a completist because it ignores the two earliest PrimalScream albums 'Sonic Flower Groove' and 'PrimalScream'. Instead it focuses on tracks from 'Screamdelica', 'Give out but don't give in'. 'Vanishing Point' . 'XTRMNTR' and 'Evil Heat'
PrimalScream are fronted by Bobby Gillespie who was previously the drummer for Jesus and the the Mary Chain. Other members have included Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine fame, Mani from the Stone Roses and Stephen Duffy, ex-Felt. Across their career they have embraced dance music and married that to their classic rock sound.
The principle problem with this album is that anyone who owns 'Screamadelica' and 'XTRMNTR' has no real need for this. The latest album 'Evil Heat' was hopelessly bad and lends nothing of interest to ...
Advantages: Great variety of musical styles and moods, quality songs Disadvantages: Won't change the world
, with varying success. The high points (for me) were Screamadelica (1990), which, with it's dance based slant on indie rock, was hailed as being 'of its time and timeless' and XTRMNTR (2000) which was darker, faster, harder rock with an electronic edge. The main low point for me was Give Out but Don't Give Up (1994) which just seemed to be a Rolling Stones tribute album. They have not been a consistent band in this sense.
The line up has changed quite a bit over the years, but front man Bobbie Gillespie, with his distinctive, if somewhat weak, vocals, is a constant and guitarist Andrew Innes is from the very early days. Bassist Mani (ex Stone Roses) seems like a relatively recent joiner, but even he has been in the band for 12 years now (ah how the years accelerate?).
Beautiful Future is the most melodic I remember PrimalScream being and it ...

Album Notes
Primal Scream's understanding of rock's varied vistas is encapsulated on this release. At its core are a series of dance-oriented tracks that broach several musical barriers. Samples, tape loops, dub and plangent chords gel together over various grooves, at times uplifting, at others ambient. Mixmasters Terry Farley and Andy Weatherall add different perspectives to individual tracks, with gospel choirs, pumping brass and spaceward basslines bubbling around several selections. Former Rolling Stones producer Jimmy Miller generated the spirit of Beggars Banquet for the rousing "Movin' On Up," while elsewhere the group imply acknowledgement to talismen the Beach Boys and Big Star. SCREAMADELICA is the ultimate confluence of rock and rave cultures.
