10. SeasonsIn The AbyssSlayer are one of the most popular thrash metal bands around, never reaching the heights of bands like Metallica or even Megadeth, yet over 15 years after their first album they are still there plugging out the records. Seasonsin the abyss marked the end of their more commercial releases, following on from the relatively accessible South of Heaven, Seasons, followed in the same ‘almost commercial’ vein, although of course with the same hard edge. Tracks like War Ensemble harked back to the old days ...
Advantages: Techincally proficient and original. Disadvantages: No real edge to the songs.
I rushed out to buy this after being so impressed with their return to form on their previous album, God Hates Us All.
Unfortunately, I have to say it seems that Slayer seem to have got into a routine of doing an aggressive album (which is what I consider to BE Slayer), then following it with an album of less aggression and more technical wizardry like they did when going from Reign in Blood to South Of Heaven.
If you are like me and prefer the all-out aggression of classic Slayer then you too will probably be disappointed with this one, although like other offerings from Slayer that haven't hit the mark, this one has some good points. Jihad is a truly original offering along with Eyes Of The Insane.
As always, the lyrics are thought-provoking and contraversial, focussing on topics that others dare not consider.
My fiance ...
Advantages: Excellent tracks, new and refreshing music style Disadvantages: Some tracks are a bit similar
*Intro*
In At The Deep End is the title of the debut album by Roll Deep, the group which are most well-known for bringing you Wiley and the mecury music prize winner Dizzee Rascal. The East-London based group has been around for many years, mainly releasing underground work when the likes of Dizzee Rascal and Wiley were still part of the group, before they had broke off to do their own thing. This album is seen as being long-overdue, and is their first release aimed at breaking a way into the mainstream music market. However it has definitely been worth the wait, as this CD is a great mix of grime and pop, bravely mixed by Roll Deep to create their own fresh and instantly recognisable style.

Album Notes
Slayer: Tom Araya (vocals, bass); Jeff Hanneman, Kerry King (guitar); Dave Lombardo (drums). Recorded at Hit City West, Hollywood Sound, California and Record Plant, Los Angeles, California. Slayer built a rabid following with faster-than-light thrash metal, eerie, disturbing lyrics, and bassist/singer Tom Araya's screamed vocals. 1986's REIGN IN BLOOD, a blinding metal classic that clocked in at below a half hour in length and was produced by Rick Rubin, put the band on the metal map. Although Slayer was a bunch of longhairs, it wasn't uncommon to see hardcore skinheads slamming away at the band's shows. But 1988's SOUTH OF HEAVEN alienated many of Slayer's punk fans, as the group slowed their speed metal to a Black Sabbath-like crawl. 1990's SEASONS IN THE ABYSS follows its predecessor's formula. The album was embraced by metal-heads everywhere, eventually earning Slayer its first gold-certified record. The furious opening "War Ensemble" is a throwback to Slayer's earlier speed metal direction, while the album-closing title track is a murky, swarming chunk of metal. Other standouts include the chilling "Dead Skin Mask," which dealt lyrically with notorious killer Ed Gein, "Blood Red," "Expendable Youth," "Hallowed Point," and "Skeletons of Society." For fans of extreme-metal, it doesn't get any better than Slayer's SEASONS IN THE ABYSS.
