Advantages: Mellow, great lyric Disadvantages: None
This self titled album is the first full album released in 2006 by the Swansea based band The Storys.
The band are a six piece who's style is probably best described as a mix of soft rock a bit like a modern day version of The Eagles play and gentle country.
The group share lead vocal duties but the main front man is Steve Balsamo is truly superb having had the lead role in Jesus Christ Superstar in the West End and has a massive vocal range (have a look on YouTube)
The album has 11 tracks with a total running time of 43 minutes. The album open up with a soft acoustic guitar based ballad 'I believe in love' with the message of how enduring love. The next track 'Only you can save me' is a mix of electric and acoustic guitar with a slightly quicker tempo, the lyrics still soft tell the longing of wanting to be with someone ...
Advantages: Music that is innovative and original and strangely beautiful Disadvantages: One or two tracks prevent the album from being an all time classic
This is a review of the recently released remastered edition. It contains the same tracks as the original except for a slightly different cover, a booklet containing extra photos and notes from Laurie Anderson and some two bonus tracks: an alternate version of 'O Superman' and 'Walk the Dog', which also featured on the United States box-set and in earlier stage performances. 'Walk the Dog' was the B-Side of the original "O Superman" single. There is also a video clip for 'O Superman' included in the package.
Influences and Historical SettingThis album is mostly derived from Anderson's four-hour one-woman stage presentation 'United States I - IV'. Here we are talking about the United States of the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Carter and Reagan era. These were released as a box set of live recordings some years after 'Big Science ...
Advantages: Classic album remastered Disadvantages: Bonus disc poorly mastered from vinyl, packaging thrown together without care or attention to detail
Originally released in 1989 on the legendary Factory label, London Records have reissued New Order's best known album in a deluxe 2CD edition. Disc one features a remaster of the original 9 track album, a second bonus disc of related singles, b-sides, and remixes from the period 1988-1990 is also included.
The album starts with the now dated sounding first single Fine Time, very much a product of the acid house era. It's nevertheless still a reasonably entertaining track. This is followed by two decent guitar led songs in All the Way and Love Less. Track 4 is Round & Round - one of New Order's poppiest and most radio friendly songs, which was also later chosen to be remixed as a single.
The almost 50/50 split between guitar based and electronics based songs continues through the rest of the album. Guilty Partner, Run and Dream ...
