Mint Royale - See you in the Morning
Mint Royale are a Big Beat Electronic style group which came together back in 1997. They started off just doing remixes of songs but later produced their first album in 1999 On The Ropes and releasing the first chart single Don't Falter featuring Lauren Laverne. Their second album Dancehall Places (my favorite) released in 2002 featured songs such as The Sexiest Man in Jamaica and the Blue Song.
This long awaited album See you In the Morning, released in 2005 wasn't a great hit to be honest but still has that big beat feel reminiscent of Dancehall Places but has a more relaxed tone to it.
1. Wait For You 2. The Effect On Me 3. Something New 4. Little Words 5. Singin' In The Rain 6. Harpy 7. I Don't Care 8. My Heart Is Beating Fast 9. See You In The Morning 10. World 11. Rest Your Head
Wait for you is a good start to the album, it sounds a little like the song from the film From Dusk till Dawn but with a really good dance beat and some thought provoking lyrics by someone with a Manchester accent! Some good guitar riffs in this one.
The Effect on Me is a little more chilled, wait, a lot more chilled. It's a good song if you're out in the garden or the park relaxing staring up at the sky. It has beautiful lyrics sung by someone who sounds a little like Macy Gray. Some great piano playing in this and also quite a sad feel to it. You can imagine this track playing on some sappy English Rom/com film starring Hugh Grant when someone has just broken up with someone else! Still a good track though…
Something New is a pleasant song, when I say pleasant it's because I can't think how else to describe it. It's a feel-good song with some good accoustic guitar and a happy beat. Some soft vocals start it off and a bit of rap kicks in from a guy that sounds like Dizzee Rascal.
Little Words is where the album takes a little nose dive. It's too relaxed for me and for Mint Royales reputation. It sounds like they're trying to rip-off Lemon Jelly putting in sound effects of frogs and stuff. The composing on the track is good as are the lyrics but it doesn't really fit the album.
Singin' in the Rain! Yes, this is one from the Golf GTI advert. This wasn't originally planned for the album as was a remix initially but due to popular demand it was added. Quite rightly so! Fantastic track which is what makes Mint Royale what they are. Their remixes tend to be better than their studio productions I find.
Harpy has an oriental theme to it, lots of strings playing before pumping in the bass. It's good as background music but not so much as a release. A lot of powerful notes but the track doesn't really go anywhere. Sorry.
I Don't Care brings back the Old Skool Royale. It has a good electronic feel to it with a bit of jazz in between. Something Norman Cook would play.
My Heart is Beating Fast is a fantastic track, full of dance. One of my favourites off this album, it has good vocals, is well paced and a strong sense of BIG BEAT!! Bring it on!
See you in the Morning is quite mellow, it's something you could fall asleep to. A good driving track I suppose.
World is a powerful song in its lyrics. Again, something that could appear in a sappy film. A chilled song about, you guessed it: The World and we live in it.
Rest Your Head starts off with the sound of rain, a choir chirp in along with a little guitar. A girl then talks us through a story about being sorry. A really moving story that makes you stop and think. I really like this track and is a good closure to the album
Overall the album is good, a few weak links and as a third album release I expected a lot more from Mint Royale. Their releases are few and far between so you'd think they'd make a better effort. There are however some really amazing tracks like Rest Your Head and Wait for You. I'd recommend this album if you like Lemon Jelly or Massive Attack. It's a lot more chilled than it's previous albums but pleasant to listen to.
Thanks for reading!
