For most people their first experience of Rammstein is the song Du Hast, which literally translated is "You Have", not "You Hate" as some have translated. The song appears on The Matrix soundtrack, and is a good indication of this album as a whole. Or possibly you've seen the album cover, of which there are 6 variations, with each member of the band being tied and tortured with some strange instruments.
Much of Rammstein's style is weighted in the hard and heavy rock vein, though they lean more to the industrial end (eg Nine Inch Nails) than the poppier styles (eq The Scorpions). Though having said that, many of their songs are very accessible, and it's hard to see why they haven't been picked up until before the likes of Linkin Park et al have come onto the scene. Then again the German lyrics might have something to do with that.
Rammstein have stuck to their own language for nearly all their songs, which I have to admire them for. Only two English translations and a cover of Depeche Mode's Stripped, are the non-German recordings they have done. All three have appeared as extra tracks on special editions of this album, though for this review I'll only run through the 11 tracks on the standard release.
The album begins with the title track, which has a very arabesque feel to the intro, but the band soon launch into their trademark sound. A very nice characteristic of the band's lyrics is that isn't too difficult to catch onto certain lines that work well in concert. It obviously helps if you know German, but it isn't a pre-requisite. Sehnsucht is typical as the title is used heavily in the rousing chorus.
Engel carries on the flow of Sehnsucht, with some great guitar riffs punching though the verses and the Angel's call. Tier, Bestrafe Mich and Du Hast, all keep the pace tight and gutsy, and it's quite easy to imagine a moshpit bouncing along.
Two of the characteristics of Rammstein are their humour and their desire to push the boundaries that little bit further. Nowhere is it more evident than in Bück Dich. I could describe the onstage antics of Till and Flake, but I'm not sure that you want to know ;) Suffice to say the whole song and performance are very tongue in cheek. Spiel Mit Mir (translation Play With Me), like Bück Dich, contains some very sexual references, which is often a subject of their songs, although if you don't know German, that is somewhat lost on the listener. Till on occasion writes some very cutting lyrics, which could be interpreted the wrong way. But then again there are many bands who have been misunderstood when trying to deal with sensitive issues.
Klavier is the calmer number of the album, which is perhaps a good thing as too much heads down mindless boogie could make for a very boring album. A rather sinister tale that I have yet to complete workout whether it's based on the old Genesis song Musical Box as the stories seem very similar. Alter Mann and Eifersucht both bring the pace back up, leaving Küss Mich (Fellfrosch) (it translates to Kiss Me (Furry frog) ... !) to round off the album typically with Rammstein's rife mixture of humour and sexual innuendo.
The album is very well paced, with a good mixture of rousing stompers and softer melodic songs, leaving you on just enough of a high to want to play the album all over again.
For most people, I imagine Du Hast will be the standout track, but the likes of the title track, Sehnsucht, Engel and Bestrafe Mich have become firm live favourites too.
If you like the harder edge of rock music, whether it's Metallica, Nine Inch Nails or Linkin Park, I'm willing to bet you'll enjoy this album too.

Advantages: Great sounds, great to listen too. Disadvantages: Can become annoying when listening all the time.
...be loudly played music, so Sehnsucht will blow your socks off.
Most of the pieces of music are sung slowly which sounds like it is are depressing but when listening carefully and knowing what it is about it becomes clear.
Sehnsucht was released in 1997 before the Mutter album was released the first Rammstein; I prefer this as it has better sounds, which make the album worth listening too.
You can find Sehnsucht priced around £10 at www.play.com ... ...other albums Sehnsucht does have the English translation in the manual, but it is fun to translate it your self. :)
This is a great album for some and sometimes not for others; I recommend this album to many, as it is quite enjoyable to listen to at times. ...

Reviews which might be of interest for "Sehnsucht - Rammstein"
Advantages: If you like Rammstein, you're going to love this Disadvantages: German industrial metal? not on most peoples tastes
On first receiving Sehnsucht through the post my initial thoughts were worrying, the picture on the front was slightly unorthodox to say the least, and to most people seems reasonably scary. I placed the CD into my player and began to listen, being a Rammstein fan myself i thought i new what to expect, however when Sehnsucht first began to play a strange wailing began to echo from my speakers. This noise was soon followed by a dampened heavy guitar playing a small rift and as it built up and the catchy keyboard(dance inspired) piece hit the speakers already you could tell rammstein had dropped the constant same tone of their previous songs and had spread out into new ground, combining heavy guitar with a mixture of dance like noises and electric beats (although of course with Christoph Schneider still playing the main drums). Much ...
Advantages: Original, fast and hard, varied Disadvantages: Contains English tracks
Sehnsucht, if you're a big Rammstein fan, is simply perfection. This is where it all began for Rammstein (not literally, as this was their second album) - the album which introduced Du Hast to a legion of hungry 90's metallers, desperate for something new. The album is quite simply unique - there is no other way to describe it. Songs like "Engel", heavily melodic with female vocals, almost beautiful in the way it's sang, and the tragic sounding "Klavier" counterbalance such catchy tunes as "Küss Mich" with it's funky cartoon sound effects to match the speed and aggression, and Sehnsucht - which, to be frank, is a masterpiece of industrial metal. The entire album, from start to finish, has but one drawback - the English translated tracks hidden. Maybe it's just me - but I don't want to hear Rammstein sing in English. I want them to sing ...
Advantages: Varied songs, More tuneful than other albums, Doesnt feel rushed. Disadvantages: Lack of heavy songs.
Another different song, being the last song on the album it needed to be a good one, in Rammstein's typical fashion, it doesn't let down. After a highly unusual opening. The vocals are perfect, though sounds very similar to Bestrafe Mich. However, the song is great and a perfect way to end a varied album. 4/5
On the whole, the album is heavily varied, with a song of every type. I give the album a 4/5 rating on the whole. Bestrafe Mich, Buck Dich and Sehnsucht stand out on this album. Some later songs were not quite up to scratch but they were not bad enough to avoid listening too. On the whole a great album and where Rammstein really took off and gained popularity. One of their best albums still. ...
Rolling Stone (2/5/98, p.62) - 3.5 Stars (out of 5) - "...Their guitars grind like an overbearing ear-bleed machine....The Uberserious guttural delivery of...Till Lindemann lends the band a melodramatic sense of melody as muscular as it is mannered....a soundtrack less for World War II than for its desloate aftermath."
