Richard D James (AKA Aphex Twin) is a very varied musician. When compared to his previous work, and in fact his newest work, this is entirely different. I have recently lost respect for the artist and don't listen to his music as much as I once did, but still appreciate this album for what it is. A soundtrack to a really bad day.

The album consists of 24 Untitled tracks, with only a small thumbnail picture in the sleeve to represent each individual composition, pictures from which not very much can be gained and definitely no clues to what the tracks might be called should they have titles.

This isn't an album you would put on after a night out, before a night out, at work or while relaxing... Rather this can accompany a late walk home or a train ride at night, serving to create a surreal and dark atmosphere that can be quite chilling at times. This is something I haven't really experienced in music before, though Richard Devine has a similar idea when it comes to compositions based on creating a feeling rather than making you want to dance. It would be the perfect accompaniment to a gothic horror film. Therefore it's my opinion that the quality of this album depends entirely upon when and where it is listened to, listen to this on a hot summer's day in the garden and you will gain absolutely NOTHING from it... Give it a try, in the dark on a cold rainy night and I guarantee you, your opinion of the album will change.
Quite experimental as far as music goes, extremely ambient, much more so than 'Ambient Works Volume 1', however if you liked that, then you should definitely give this a try. Although everyone I know who has listened to my copy has given it back looking rather puzzled about what I may gain from listening to it. It is a double album so well worth the money (Though upon looking, this seems to have been deleted so is really hard to track down, but I'm sure it will appear on EBay at some point), Best to listen to a few samples before parting with your hard earned cash in my opinion, as it's definitely not for everyone!
No track names, each is represented by an unrecognisable image inside the sleeve, a nice touch. I wouldn't say there are any standout tracks, as it works best as a whole experience rather than a cd you put on just to play a few favourites.
A totally different side to Aphex Twin and one I recommend you hear. Just don't expect it to sound anything like 'Come to Daddy' or 'Windowlicker'
Advantages: Ground breaking endlessly fascinating music for gazing out of windows to Disadvantages: Not one for fans of heavy metal or people who only like songs with words etc.
...his best ever.
Unlike Selected Ambient Works one, there are hardly any beats on this - and instead most of the tracks are a series of interesting trips through the echo chamber with some beautiful drones and tones to accompany you. Yet despite the minimalist nature of the sounds here, the production means that you rarely get bored of these sounds. Also because they are so distinctive, they haven't dated at all really. Evocative of Brian Eno's work ... ...progressions build a series of thumbnail sketches. The moods conjured range from euphoric and calming through to eerie, nocturnal and in one case downright terrifying. None of the tracks have titles and instead are represtned by picutres. Really though the need for titles is rendered meaningless by the lack of lyrics. Instead, just listen to the tracks and soak in the atmosphere.
If I have one criticism of this album it's simply that it's not very ...

Album Notes
The songs on SELECTED AMBIENT WORKS VOL. 2 have no titles. Aphex Twin: Richard James (various instruments). Very occasionally in music, something will come at you from so far out on the left field, that not only do you not note its immediate import, you scarcely recognize it as music at all. This is the record that cemented the media's fascination with Richard James, a Cornwall bedroom DJ. Selected Ambient Works is not an entirely representative recording, as these are essentially mood pieces, unlike the more instantaneous, dancefloor-targeted material that originally brought him to the nation's attention. Nevertheless if you are prepared to make the journey, and can see past the album's intimidating length and its lack of linear framework, there are some exquisite moments - ranging in texture from melodic delirium to sweeping melancholy.

Alternative Press (5/02, p.104) - Included in AP's '10 Essential Pioneering Electronic Albums'. Rolling Stone (6/30/94, p.72) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...it's the absence of beats that makes the music so strange and haunting, and when the beats do surface, they serve to accent a tone rather than sustain a tempo..." Spin (3/94, p.76) - "...undeniable proof that techno was blossoming into a new form of electronic composition...it's the restraint of James' music that paradoxically induces such an unrestrained emotional response in the listener...it's like he's playing acoustic instruments from the distant future or an alien civilization..." Q (1/94, p.84) - Included in Q's list of `The 50 Best Albums Of 1993' - "...[a] brilliant collection of experiments...always fascinating and somehow other-worldly, this is music as enjoyable as it is innovative and of its time..." Melody Maker (1/1/94, p.76) - Ranked #10 in Melody Maker's list of the `Albums Of The Year' for 1993 - "...Creating a soundscape like a vast, depopulated techno world, the Twin's scurrying swathes of electronics recall Eno, Kraftwerk, Terry Riley--none of whom he'd heard of until years after this stuff. Awesome...." Option (8/94, p.90) - "...His accomplishment here is monumental; this solo electronic album is so unusual that it needs to be stated up front that it sounds like no other recording in the genre, ever..."
