Advantages: Great Albumart, the solos are pure awesomeness. Disadvantages: VERY unlike the older IF, and a IF fan is probably not happy.

The CD 'A Sense Of Purpose' got weird eyes, because they made a BIG change to theire sound, ALOT of clean vocals, some deep lyrics and they STILL rock, they do. Why I don't burn them for changing theire sound?
Because In Flames is still true to themselves, and did not do it to get mainstream and listened by 12 year old girls, but because they wanted to change theire sound. I will go past every track, telling my likes and dislikes. ... ...if you have not followed them, but only have 'Lunar Strain', you are in for a heart attack, that is why I am reviewing the tracks.
1. "The Mirror's Truth" - 2:58
Starts off with great guitars, nice jamming on the drums, gets me ready to headbang. The first track they made a video for, which is kind of bad, but the song rocks, so it does not matter.
In Flames has been around for quite a long time, creating CD after CD since 1994, they have 9 studio records, and a live DVD.
I can already tell you though, this CD rocks, but if you have not followed them, but only have 'Lunar Strain', you are in for a heart attack, that is why I am reviewing the tracks.
1. "The Mirror's Truth" - 2:58 Starts off with great guitars, nice jamming on the drums, gets me ready to headbang. The first track they made a video for, which is kind of bad, but the song rocks, so it does not matter.
2. "Disconnected" - 3:36 The begin reminds of older In Flames material, but that gets changed really quickly with the emo chorus, yes, emo chorus ('I feel like shit, but atleast I feel something' ), but after he sings the word 'something' the music starts playing really awesomely, and you would forgive them for the lyrics of this track, you would. Has some kind of a good message. PS: I would personally have sex with the outro.
3. "Sleepless Again" - 4:09 More screaming lyrics, and you hear more voices, which is also enjoyable, however, the music gets put in the back a little too much, and it seems like they just wanted to finish this, they could have gotten alot of more out of this. Short riffs in this track make you not care how much the rest of the track puts you off, and after the solo it is all good, the solo is totally worth listening the song for, overall well, but the begin just could have been so much better.
4. "Alias" - 4:49 I love the way it begins, it adds some mystery to the song, but the chorus pissed me off, seems like some kind of a religious message or something, but again, if you do not listen the lyrics, again, a enjoyable track, however, this is a track you will find yourself skipping if you want to enjoy the CD, it is not bad, but sure as hell not the best.
5. "I'm the Highway" - 3:41 Does not really seem like IF at the begin, but the crack and touch to his voice remind you soon enough, and his voice comes out really well on this track, and is really in harmony with the music, well timed, really one of the best tracks on this album, if not the best.
6. "Delight and Angers" - 3:38 Enjoyable intro, I love the lyrics, and this is a track I find myself singing along to, it rocks, the lyrics rock, the harmony rocks, the rest rocks, it is just an awesome track, different then track 5, but equally awesome, if not slightly better.
7. "Move Through Me" - 3:05 After track 6 it is really hard to make people not be dissapointed with your next track, and it seems like they overcompensated, this song just strokes against my hairs, even though it has good guitarwork, it pisses me off, but then I hear the solo, and I want to get married to this track. The solo WILL make you forgive the track for sucking, which it does.
8. "The Chosen Pessimist" - 8:13 Long track, daring, especially with not too much text filling the time, It never fires up, but you will forgive them for it, because it does not annoy. EXCEPT for the few seconds between 2.30 and 3.00, where he sounds like Bono, sadly enough, he does, and it takes the 5 minutes after that to put it right. Break out at 6 minutes, the break out rocks, but he oversings the music slightly sometimes, but it does not matter. Great track, however, I will make him fart out his balls next time he makes me think I am listening to U2.
9. "Sober and Irrelevant" - 3:21 Nothing special about this track, its alright, but thats all, its really a average track, and the small guitar solo, which absolutely rocks kind of makes you wonder why the rest of the song does nothing for you.
10. "Condemned" - 3:34 'Chimaira'-like Intro, but the singing puts me right back where I was, listening IF newest album. The lyrics are weird, but not in a bad way, and the clean vocals in this track make me feel good, and the singing gets swapped really well. The Music is stunning, the guitar, the rest, the drums, the bass, and how you can feel the solo coming up, it rocks.
11. "Drenched in Fear" - 3:29 Like track 9, except for some nice guitar work and drums it really is not worth listening, its not bad, but you would rather listen track 10 twice.
12. "March to the Shore" - 3:26 HE GROWLS, Oh yeah, he growls in this track, and after that a kick ass riff. the song is not special and sounds like a mixture of what you heared in the past songs. The 1 second growl makes the track worth listening though.
13. "Eraser" (Japanese bonus track) - 3:18 Has a solo, but the song just sucks, I know an IF fan should not say it, but yes, this track is below IF standards, they are so much better then this, and even the solo can not excite me.
14. "Tilt" (Japanese bonus track) - 3:45 Well, average, not bad, but not good, and especially compared to track 5/6 15. "Abnegation" (Japanese bonus track) - 3:43 The first song and last song that has vocals that piss me off. I actually put this track off, and if I knew how, I would cut this track out of the CD, the music rocks, but the singing pisses me off so bad, no 5 minute guitar solo can make up for it.
I am judgemental, because I knew In Flames from the start, but the CD is great to listen on the background, but if you had any hopes up, just listen track 5 and 6 over and over, and sometimes slip in track 11, and do not pay attention to the rest, it will dissapoint you.
The music rocks, the vocals rock, but they miss the perfect combo of those 2 much more then they used to, and actually created a song that pissed me off, and I am a loyal In Flames fan.
First album of In Flames you look at, do not hesitate, and buy it. In Flames fan, do not listen to it, the CD is good, if you do not compare it to theire much more awesome CDs.
Advantages: Clearer Sound Compared to past albums, larger target audience, more adventurous drumming Disadvantages: Not for those who like raw death metal, more clean vocals could be a put off
A Sense of Purpose is a huge step, or in some peoples' opinions a great fall for In Flames. Looking back at the previous In Flames albums, A Sense of Purpose doesn't have a style close to any of the previous albums, however if you are a long-term In Flames fan, you will have already noticed that the raw "Death Metal" sound that In Flames possessed with the earlier albums, for example Lunar Strain, Subterranean and Jester Race is slowly progressing ... ..."mainstream," I believe that "A Sense of Purpose" is the most "mainstream" sounding album to date, attracting new In Flames fans that would not usually listen to In Flames. If you own the In Flames album, "Come Clarity," and like the cleaner sound In Flames adopted in that album, I believe that is the closest preview to this In Flames album, which furthers the transistion In Flames have made to an album full of songs with clean vocals and less raw ...

Album Notes
Ninth studio album from hugely popular Swedish melodic death metal band follows 2006's 'Come Clarity'. Founded by former members of the legendary At The Gates, In Flames are pioneers of the so-called "Gothenburg sound" which has been so influential on modern metal, and have a well-defined style with which they are sticking on this album. The thick, aggressive riffs, fast tempos, atmospheric keyboards, electronic elements and strong melody lines are all present and correct and the album includes the single 'The Mirror's Truth'.
