mountain climber Heinrich Harrer, there's a good chance this lavish $70 million film would not have been made. It was one of two films from 1997 (the other being Martin Scorsese's exquisiteKundun) to view the turmoil between China and Tibet through the eyes of the young Dalai Lama. But with Pitt onboard, this adaptation of Harrer's acclaimed book focuses more on Harrer, a Nazi party member whose life was changed by his experiences in Tibet with the Dalai Lama. Having survived a treacherous climb on the challenging peak of Nanga Parbat and a stint in a BritishPOW camp, Harrer and climbing guide Peter Aufschnaiter (nicely played by David Thewlis) arrive at the Tibetan city of Lhasa, where the 14-year-old Dalai Lama lives as ruler of Tibet. Their stay is longer than either could have expected (the "seven years" of the title), and their lives are forever transformed by their proximity to the Tibetan leader and the peaceful ways of the Buddhist people. China looms over the land as a constant invasive threat, butSeven Years in Tibetis more concerned with viewing Tibetan history through the eyes of a visitor. The film is filled with stunning images and delightful moments of discovery and soothing, lighthearted spirituality, and although he is somewhat miscast, Pitt brings the requisite integrity to his central role. What's missing here is a greater understanding of the young Dalai Lama and the culture of Tibet. WhereasKunduntells its story purely from the Dalai Lama's point of view,Seven Years in Tibetis essentially an outsider's tale. The result is the feeling that only part of the story's been told here--or maybe just the wrong story. But Harrer's memoir is moving and heartfelt, and director Jean-Jacques Annaud has effectively captured both sincerity and splendor in this flawed but worthwhile film.--Jeff Shannon

Advantages: Fantastic main theme, lyrical throughout, Yo-Yo Ma, a real pleasure Disadvantages: For the most part will not satisfy fans of noisy music
...Of the four John Williams scores of 1997 (that also icluded Rosewood, Amistad, and The Lost World), I have always considered SevenYears in Tibet to be the best. Rosewood I never have liked, Amistad had a beautiful theme but was pretty standard for the most part, and the Jurassic Park sequel wallowed in the rhythmic darkness of deep jungles so much that the original film's themes were almost completely absent and the new big theme was criminally underused. SevenYears in Tibet, on the other hand, delivers on almost all the fronts that the three others failed in.
Directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud and starring Brad Pitt, the film tells the true story of the Austrian mountain climber Heinrich Harrer, who went to the Himalayans to scale a mountain at the outset of World War II and is subsequently arrested and denied his return to Ausria due...

Advantages: Innovative, musically accomplished, emotional; a perfect accompaniment to the film Disadvantages: It's Bjork - so if you hate her you'll probably hate this
..., and are the basis of the film.
There are seven songs on this CD, each of which appears in the film. Theis is perhaps the only way in which this soundtrack does not satisfy entirely: it has only 30 minutes of music and is the price of a normal CD. Nonetheless, I find this wholly preferable to the aforementioned addition of meaningless and disconnected songs onto a soundtrack.
The songwriting and incorporation of the film into the songs is fantastic. Every song on the CD is a narrative of a particular part of the film (which is a musical and hence these are all the songs which appear in it), in which the main Character "Selma" drifts off into a reverie, imagining the noises of her everyday life turning into music. Bjork is able to incorporate the sounds of railways, factories (amongst others) into the beats in her songs, and over the top...

Advantages: A top collection of tracks for a top film! Disadvantages: None
...Badly Drawn Boy first shot to prominence with his debut album The Hour of Bewilderbeast, in 2000. This was a fine debut and was recognised with a Mercury Music Prize for Best Album.
Born Damon Gough, he began recording after meeting the like-minded Andy Votel at a Manchester nightclub. The pair formed the Twisted Nerve label.
His fantastic lyrics and simple yet catchy guitar riffs led Author Nick Hornby to ask the singer to score and record the soundtrack to the film being made of this book About a Boy.
The fact that Badly Drawn Boy crafted this soundtrack to such a good modern film is not suprising although it must be said that he could not have done this unless he was indeed a fan of the original book. The some times odd, quirky tracks he produced sit so well within the film that this was a marriage made in heaven...
