Advantages: Contemporary premise, excellent production values, brilliantly sharp and witty script, memorable characters Disadvantages: very "American", some explicit dialogue and sexual references
Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) is a New York journalist who writes "Sex And The City", a column focusing on the nature of relationships between the sexes in the late 1990s. In the name of research, she tests out various theories on Manhattan's unsuspecting male population with the aid of her three best friends - Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) and Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon).
Sex & The City - the show - offers some witty and incisive commentaries on the plight of single 30-something women in a ruthless town like the Big Apple. Contrary to some of the hype upon its launch in 1998, the characters are not quite cold, calculated man-eaters.
There is a self-awareness and smart intelligence to them (which manifests itself differently in each of the four women) - as well as a basic femininity ...
Advantages: Great songs, production, lyrics Disadvantages: If you don't like Leonard's voice this won't convert you
We've seen so many times that artists and songwriters who have great success throughout the 60's and the 70's often have a horrendous 80's as they try to keep up with the times. It could be argued that prior to this Len was having a creative crisis. The mid 70's and early 80's were just about fair to him but albums were patchy compared to his 60's output and by his own high standards. Just when we thought Len's time was up, he brought us this curious powerhouse.
The scene is set with the opening track 'First We Take Manhattan ...
Advantages: perfect little gem of a film Disadvantages: none
feel like you?re tackling one emotional hurdle after another rather than trying to track a hundred storylines at once. This is not some sort of groundbreaking film that will challenge your ideas about cinema, or change your life. It?s just a film about individual stories buried in universal experience (and if nothing else the ending makes this crystal clear). Ultimately, Singles is just a comfortable old slipper of a movie that will never wear out.
?Does everybody go through this??
?Nah, I think it?s just us.?
