Holly - Ilex
I have seen many Holly hedges and we have a holly mixed in with our hedge, we did not plant it but I think its seed dropped from a bird as it sat in the bush next to it.
Holly is an evergreen tree. A holly is easy to identify as it has shiny prickly leaves with sharp points. Actually there is one holly that does not have points on its leaves .The leaves of the holly is green and some are variegated with cream. The female holly produces red berries that are used at Christmas for decoration. To get holly berries there must be a male tree nearby to pollinate the female to produce berries. Some hollies have yellow berries. If you are buying holly at the garden centre the sex should be on the label.

Christmas is nearly here so it’s nearly time to deck the halls, sitting rooms, and parlours with holly I thought I would write a little op about it.
Holly is a family of more than 300 species. They have red, black, white, cream, or orange berries.
Some hollies are used medicinally.
North American holly Ilex opaca has in the past been given for bronchitis, fever, worms, gout and rheumatism
Ilex aquifolium has been used for malaria; rheumatism and influenza believe the leaves were used
The one we are familiar with is the common/English holly Ilex aquifolium
Holly is associated in Christmas traditions throughout northern Europe. I suspect it symbolises the crown of thorns and the red berries blood.

When I was younger I always had my nose in a book. Being the huge animal lover I was, I often chose to read books about animals. The Animal Ark book series by Lucy Daniels was very popular with me, and one of the titles was Hamster in the Holly.
Although you should never judge a book by its cover, I always do, so it is important that it looks good! Thankfully this one does. There is a gorgeous little picture of a hamster, a gorgeous golden colour, wedged in front of a holly bush complete with glossy red berries. It is the one cover that I can never forget, its adorable. It definitely made a good impression on me.
The book itself is about Mandy Hope, whose parents are vets. A hamster has gone missing from its home, and Mandy has taken it upon herself to find the little rodent. But can she find it before it is out in the cold too long ...
