Advantages: An excellent introduction to Peter Gabriel Disadvantages: None
Released in 1990 “Shaking the Tree (16 GoldenGreats)” is PeterGabriel’s official greatest hits / best of package. It covers his career from his debut solo album up to the soundtrack of “The Last Temptation of Christ” “Passion”. Since that album Gabriel has made one proper studio album “Us”, the millennium project commission “Ovo” and issued two live albums “Secret World” and the live version of “Ovo”. Reputedly there is another studio album in the works, “Up”.
The album is not arranged chronologically , but because of the consistency of his work , it is a very coherent package. The only glaring omission is that the second album is not represented at all, which is fairly shocking given the amount of cover the other albums get ...
Advantages: It's Peter Gabriel Disadvantages: None come to mind
the resolution, in your eyes, all the fruitless searches Oh I see the light and the heat oh I want to be that complete” I love this line, wish I could find someone that made me feel that way.
This version of “So” was re-mastered by Tony Cousins who did a similar excellent renovation to whole of PeterGabriel’s solo back catalogue in 2002. The following year the whole collection was re-issued again in SACD form I can’t comment on that issue, as I have not heard any of them.
For me this is still PeterGabriel’s most complete album, with the release of this version he has put out the album as he originally wanted too because of the limits of vinyl the running had to be changed to the following: -
Vinyl
Side 1
Red rain
Sledgehammer
Don’t Give Up
That voice Again
Side 2
In your eyes
Mercy Street ...
Advantages: Great performance, strong setlist, fascinating stage show, well produced. Disadvantages: Can't think of any! Any personal preferences over song choices, I suppose.
Filmed in Milan in 2003, this DVD shows a fantastic display from PeterGabriel's 'Growing Up' tour. A very strong setlist and a great stage setup makes this a fantastic concert.
The stage itself is circular, surrounded on all sides by the audience, which gives it quite an enclosed feel. It also rotates, which is used for many interesting purposes! Gabriel explains that with the 'Growing Up' tour, he wanted to have a 'vertical' theme for the stage, with things physically moving up and down. The stage setup seems to 'evolve' throughout the concert, constantly shifting, revealing new platforms and objects. All this is accompanied by a good light show, and filmed on a wide variety of cameras.
Gabriel seems to use some new kind of interesting stage show on almost each song - whether it be riding a bike on 'Solsbury Hill', going inside ...

Producers include: Peter Gabriel, Bob Ezrin, Peter Walsh, Daniel Lanois, Steve Lillywhite. Recorded between 1977 & 1990. All tracks have been digitally remastered. A portrait of the artist as hit singles machine, SHAKING THE TREE features Peter Gabriel's most commercial post-Genesis material in one convenient package. Every cut is superb, and the dazzling track list includes "Solsbury Hill," still rock's most eloquent resignation speech, the anti-apartheid classic "Biko," the magisterial "Don't Give Up" with Kate Bush, the MTV friendly "Shock the Monkey" and "Sledgehammer," among others. Critical carping about whether this package is representative of his oeuvre as a whole is beside the point. This is, clearly, the Peter Gabriel album you'd most want to play at a party.
Album Reviews
Q (1/91) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "..Fifteen years and 16 hit singles since Genesis, Peter Gabriel still has the touch." Entertainment Weekly (1/11/91) - "..Peter Gabriel's forays into African, funk, folk, techno-pop, and Motown are always tempered by the theatrical sensibility he developed as a front man in the '70s for the progressive rock group Genesis...most of the tracks are more than "golden greats"-- they're some of the best rock songs of the post-punk era." - Rating: A
