quartet set new standards in multi-faith, multicultural instrumental fusion music. A Handful of Beauty is the efflorescence of Shakti's trinity of Sony albums. The Shakti concept in Hinduism embodies feminine creativity and power (and did it millennia before "girl power" wanly shone forth). Shakti by 1976 had settled into the decade's most satisfying line-up of tabla nawaaz (maestro) Zakir Hussain (son of Ravi Shankar's long-standing tabla player Alla Rakha, the player who converted more people to the intricacies of Hindustani rhythm than anyone in history), the guitarist John McLaughlin (former Miles Davis alumnus and leader of the Mahavishnu Orchestra), the Karnatic (South Indian classical) violinist L. Shankar and the Karnatic percussionist T.H. Vinayakram. Together they bind together three improvisation-based traditions, respectively Hindustani, jazz and Karnatic music with the natural accent on melodic and rhythmic extemporisation. Harmony plays a less than minor role in this music. This glory's pieces radiate acoustical energy and vitality, scotching any suspicions of heresy arising from the appropriateness of their name. --Ken Hunt
Davis on In A| Silent Way and Bitches Brew and then with the Mahavishnu Orchestra so that he became for many the fusion guitarist. He then surprised these very same people in the mid-70s by forming Shakti, an acoustic group playing Indian music. Here in this double album he reunites with Zakir Hussain (tabla) and T.H. "Viku" Vinayakram (ghatam, a percussion instrument) who were in the group and is joined by special guest Hariprasad Chaurasia (bansuri, a flute-type instrument). They were brought together for a UK tour in 1997 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the independence of India and Pakistan. Recorded live, this is a feast of music, which unlike some attempts by pop groups who grab Indian music and jam it into their music shows just how exciting a meeting of Eastern and Western musicians can be. The playing is as breathtaking as you would expect from musicians of this calibre. Jazz and traditional Indian music combine to make a truly remarkable musical statement. --Phil Brett

Advantages: brill cd Disadvantages: none
...i thought that this cd was outstanding. i absolutely love u.srinivas' music and am a huge fan. his style of playing and nuances are truly unique. Zakir hussain is such a brilliant precussionist and is so well established that anything besides perfection can not be expected. i find these two so brilliant and talented that even i get jelous! ;) Then i absolutely love Vikku Vinayakram on south indian precussion. he is so immensly talented and has such a talent for complicated technical and mathematical cycles and rhythmic improvisation. johnmc.laughin however, does not play to my taste and does not fulfill the wishes i would have from him. i find him too uncomprimising and after u srinivas has played i always forward johns bits. im sorry to say that but i dont really feel his vibes and emotion through his playing. apart from...

Beautiful Review ofIn A Silent Way [Remastered] - Miles Davisby
JaySee
Advantages: Beautiful and relaxing. An outstanding band. Disadvantages: A little short.
...This 1969 Miles Davis effort was one of his first explorations of electric sounds, and it would have been understandable if he had stopped after this outstanding album. It is short, clocking in at only forty minutes, but what a forty minutes it is. The music has a great feeling of space and relaxation, and it has an ambient feel. This does not detract from the fine solo work that Miles, Wayne Shorter and the rest of the band, however. Tony Williams is in particularly fine form on the drum kit, and JohnMcLaughlin's guitar work is sublime. If you have never experienced Miles' electric period before, this would be a perfect starting point, since it is groundbreaking without being overly challenging, like Bitches Brew....

911 AGAIN! Review ofMoving On - 911by
lorraine_lorraineuk
Advantages: Lots of cool songs Disadvantages: probably cant buy it anymore its 7 years old !!!!
...Another review for me on 911 - as you might already know from remember this band or reading my previous review 911 were a boyband in the 90s and made up of 3 members Lee, Spike and Jimmy with Lee being the main singer.
Moving on was their 2nd album and in my opinion was their best album from thier 4 that they made before splitting.
This song contains 12 songs, in which only 2 were not written by 911 and co written with JohnMcLaughlin (who is now famous for writing so many great songs for many great bands and artist including Westlife and anyone remember 5ive). Those 2 songs that were not written by 911 were Dont Walk Away which was written solo by JohnMcLaughlin and How do you want me to love you, which was a cover version.
The other 12 songs are "All I want is you" which was released by 911 in 1998. This is quite a slow poppy...
